No power on low end

I have a 95 F150 S/C 4x4 with a 302 powering a 5spd. The truck is geared quite low cruising speed of 60 leaves the tach at 1700rpm. The problem is my power band doesn't kick in until about 15-1600 rpm, so take off is real sluggish and even passing if I don't down shift is slow. I do get decent mileage with it and would like to retain as much of that as possible. So I'm asking for any advice on how to get better low power out of the ole girl. I've owned the truck since it had 50k on it and now it has near 165k. Doesn't burn any oil, solid runner yet. I did replace the fuel pump in it thinking it was being starved, but saw no noticeable difference. Any help?

Do a compression check on each cylinder

It has always been sluggish, but it has gotten worse. I realize it is getting up there in years, I guess I'm just putting off doing a rebuild just yet. A larger diameter spark plug wire will also help won't it? I have always used Bosh platinum plugs, does anyone suggest something better?
