Made the switch to synthetic oil

After purchasing my 07' supercrew (thanks to some joker who couldn't keep up the payments!! ended up getting it for 24k) I recieved it with 10, 545 on the odometer, and today I said what the hell, I'm goin to go with a fully synthetic oil.
I chose Castrol syntec 0w30 (made in Germany) and went with a Mobil 1 filter.
I have to say I was a little suprised about how "thin" the synthetic oil poured out the bottle.
Was anyone else suprised by how thin synthetic oil is?
I'm hoping to gain a little in the mileage dept, and hopefully some engine life.

Doubt you'll see any difference in the fuel mileage using synthetic oil. I've used a variety of synthetic oils and my averages are always the same. German Castrol is suitable for extended drains. I run 10K OCIs on synthetics, helps to recoup some of the additional cost of buying the oil in the first place.

Changed to synthetic a long time ago

I've got a 99 F-150 4.2L V-8. Just a small truck. I changed to Mobil 1 synthetic right after the 36,000 mile warranty was over.

I've gone as long as 12,000 miles between changes with the oil still looking good. I'm going about 7-9,000 now.

I use about 1 quart every 750-1000 miles.

The mileage increase a small amount. Maybe 1/2 mile a gallon.

But the big payoff is the longevity. I currently have 323,250 miles on it and it purrs like a kitten, doesn't smoke at anytime and I'd take a thousand mile trip in it in a heartbeat.

I've also tried to do the rest of the maintenance on time and so far no trouble with anything major. A few lights out, some worn out front end parts, etc.

I'm a firm believer in synthetic.

A lot of the guys around here love synthetic. Personally, I don't quite see the point unless you use the extended-interval stuff and even that kind of scares me.

0W30 seems kinda thin, though. I'd suggest using what the manual says to use (5W30 or 5W20 if I'm not mistaken) unless you live in a pretty cold climate.

Wink

I use Mobile One in all of my vehicles,I have used it in my truck since day one, it is a 99 f150 4X4. I change oil between 9and 10 thousand miles and use Mobile One or Pure One filters. My truck only has 65000 miles on it, so it sits a lot. I also use Mobile One in my 02 TBird, my 07 Fusion and my 93 Sho. Never had any major engine problems in any of my vehicles. Something must be working I think it is the synthetic oil.

I also switched to synthetic. Amsoil. in the owners manual there are specs for the oil that ford requires. you can cross reference this with amsoil site to be sure to get the right oil. in my case it is the 0w20.

I've been buying just the Motorcraft 5-20 stuff at China-Mart, 10 bucks for 5 quarts you can't pass up.

x2, I have 50,000 on my 02, but so far so good running conventional. I did change to MC this last change because I can get it at about the same price as Valvoline and it is specified for the truck. My last car had 170k on a turbocharged 4 cylinder, still ran like a top with 5qts of Valvoline every 3k.

I can't say major engine problems can be blamed too often on "inferer" oil, unchanged for long long periods and high milage or never checked which should be considered neglect and not really the oil's fault. Check it once in awhile and change it when it needs it and you can't really go wrong.
