MAF Sensor cleanup
MAF Sensor cleanup
Good Day All!
I was looking to see if anyone has cleaned ther MAF sensor, and seen any mileage increase / Idle smoothness changes. Cleaned the wife's van (2000 Windstar) MAF sensor and immediately noticed it ran a lot smoother, even though the sensor did'nt look too dirty. Looking to see if anyone else had different or the same results, and recommendations for a schedule to clean the sensor, say every 5000 miles for optimum performance?

I've never actually done this, everytime I look at it, there is nothing to clean it seems. I've used a K&N since almost day 1 and still nothing. Do you guys take it out or do you just spray at it where it sits? I'm looking to clean the t-body again so I thaught I'd hit the MAF and EGR too maybe.
I took mine out at 30,000 and cleaned it with the spray. I too, have the K&N dropin, but it was still clean. I just did it to see what it looked like. May do it again at 60,000 which will be very soon. Still runs great.

make 100% sure the element is completely dry before reinstalling and starting the truck. the element is really nothing more than a lightbulb fillament. the way it works is it heats up to a specific temp and how ever many degrees the air passing over it cools is it what your computer tells the engine air is comming in at.
Thanks for all the input! Think I'll clean the sensor twice a year, seems like a good schedule to work with.

Just completed it, plus a t-body spraying to go. The MAF was only a tiny bit dusty, but it aint now, nothing in that part is. The t-body was pretty clean as well considering I cleaned last about 1.5 yrs ago, new gasket too. I planned on doing this for an emissions test coming up, so now that is done, I'm going out later and beatin the **** out of it. I usually do very well, like almost new car so they say, but further proof that if maintained, these things run like day 1.
Anybody got any pics on the removal etc.? I have an 05' 5.4 3v. I believe the MAF is the thingy off the right side of the air box just past the filter. Mine has a red pin that can be pulled. I tugged on it slightly but it didn't release. Any other special things to do to remove. I dang sure don't want to break the thing?
Try this, its about as detailed as I could find.http://www.fordf150.net/howto/clean-...low-sensor.php

The link says that the ONLY thing to use is "Electronic Cleaner." To do mine, I purchased CRC "MAF Cleaner," or something like that (had MAF in the title). I assume this would also be ok to use, despite the warnings in the link?
If you have the actual "MAf cleaner" available at your local store buy it. The most important thing is that it is fast disolving,is not harmful to plastic and leaves no residue<--that would defeat the purpose of cleaning it as it would change the resistance of the wire. electrical contact cleaner/ computer part cleaner will work. I have not seen the actual MAF cleaner but I would guess it is really close to the same. DO NOT USE BRAKE CLEANER, or tri chlorethalyne. Dont use compressed air on it either.
