Coolant light came on and guage is hot

i was sitting in the drivethru with my truck in nuetral for prolly 3 minutes and as i pulled away i look at my guages to see a coolant light and the guage is reading HOT! i turned the truck of and looked under the hood for anything out of the ordinary and found nothing. i turned it back on and it went back to regular running temp. what could have caused this? also i hav notice that my coolant resevior cap is spraying coolant on my air box. do i need a new cap?

You either need a new cap, or it's not screwed on tight, or the reservoir is cracked or damaged. The probable reason for the overheat is - are you ready - low coolant!

the engine was not hot because it was only running for a few minutes. it didnt feel hot either. im thinking it is a sensor or something. thanks for the info.

If it was a sensor, it would be unlikely it would be blowing coolant out of the reservoir.

Nice pics of your truck in the mud. Check for air flow obstructions. Warm up engine and feel the upper rad hose for heat. If it is cool the thermostat is stuck closed. Do you have underdrive pulleys? Check the serpentine belt. Is it slipping? When was the cooling system last serviced?

jmc,
i dnt have underdrive pulleys and i dont know when it was last serviced either. i have owned it since febuary and just now had this problem.

kingfish51,
the coolant leak is not comparable to one of an overheat. it is a slight spray. i just thought it was odd

Doesn't take a slight spray long to empty the cooling system.
