It is hard for me to give the 6.4 much of a chance with the ugly wrapper they put it in, seems it is a love it or hate bodystyle, as die hard of a Ford fan as I am I just can't swallow that one. The late 6.0's are a good find, just don't let them sit or the turbo will stick.

Personally I would rather have a mid to late 90's turboed 7.3, a 99-03 7.3 Powerstroke or a 95ish-02ish Cummins, than anything being made today. Yeah they may not win the horsepower battle, but they have more enough to get the job done (at least my job anyway), they don't look like something out of the bargain hot wheels bin at Wal-Mart, and they don't take a rocket scientist to work on.

If you want a generator, get one with a cummins (or cat), but when buying a truck, you have to look at the whole truck, get the ford.

So you think 6 cylinder diesels are worthless? Cause as far as i have seen all 18 wheeler engines these days are inline 6's

no it was a joke, but seriously, what kind of response do you expect on a FORD forum?

Either a 7.3L Powerstroke or a 24 valve 5.9L Cummins. I wouldn't even consider anything "new" that's out now. Way too many problems, way too few guys "getting lucky" (having absolutely no problems at all).

The Cummins 6 bangers are mid-truck engines in a light duty truck. The Ford diesels are a light truck engine. While you can find the 385 series diesel in the mid-trucks, it does so under a different engine management sytem of Navistar. Not the same as the Ford version. The Cummins is built for the long haul and commercial market. If you want to drive a diesel that will be very similiar to a gas engine, you want the Ford. Other than the noise it is so driver friendly most folks really don't realize the difference. The Cummins will be slower and not near as driver friendly. Serviceablity goes to the Cummins hands down- Ford isn't even close. Overall value goes to the Ford. Compare the used Fords to the used Dodges. Fords will command more resale value. We have both at work and the first 6.0s everybody loved until they started breaking down. then the Dodges showed up and everybody wanted to drive those. Now the new Fords are everybodys favorites. But ultimately it is your choice. Frankly, most folks don't need a current production light diesel and they are often under used and expensive toys. If you are not pulling heavy trailers on a regular basis, a current diesel is a poor and expensive choice.

not to mention that the current ford brocher says the ford V10 out pulls the competitions diesel. I would go for the V10 myself... save yourself nearly $7000 in truck..... That is a LOT of gas. As much as I would LOVE a diesel, practicality would dictate a V10

Same here. I think a Ford is a better made truck, the Cummins engine may be just a bit better than even a 7.3 PSD.

I think Built54 must be joking, but I had to chime in anyway.

Being a owner of a 4.9l which is hands down on of the most bulletproof engines I've ever had, I would say a 6 (straight 6 six anyway) has earned it's place in "Truckdom". My brother wrecked that lil f150 or it'd still be on the road right now. I haven't even sold it, because the engine and tranny are totally perfect condition.

I also own a 96 Dodge 3/4 ton with a cummings 6 turbo. I don't use it much but that engine surely has a place in truckdom as well. My pop uses it a lot for tractor towing(he restores 'em), and I'd say it's a fine motor. Damn shame it's inside that ugly dodge lol. Oh and real damn shame it's hooked up to that getrag tranny which I think should be a crime of some sort.

Anyway that's my 2 cents on the 6 belonging in a truck.

Oh btw Built54, that's a fine truck you got there, damn fine. You should be proud of how bad@ss that sucker is. And I read your build(swap) and saw you had some minor fuel and tuning troubles, but man, it all coulda been a lot worse than that(I know u know that), so I say congrats on a totally sucessful build(swap).
