Engine Break-in period
Engine Break-in period
Ok, WYOSF posted about mileage and break-in. There were several responses that mentioned a need/no need for a break-in period. As I haven't taken delivery of mine yet, I just wanted to ask flat out, "Is there a break-in period?" Thanks all.
P.S. 38 more days left til I get back to the land of the free.

first 200 miles, drive it normal, dont hit redline. after that, drive it like you stole it for 400 miles or so. Then drive it how ever you want, and you will have a much longer lasting and higher performing engine. Baby it, and it will wear out twice as fast.

My opinion? DO drive like a grandpa for the first 1000 miles and avoid constant RPM's. Then change the oil and filter (yeah, I know they say you don't have to do this, but I still like doing it) and drive it however you like.
So taking what all has been said, I'll vary driving for 500-1000 miles, than change the oil. It may not be needed, but what has an oil change ever hurt?

best thing i've seen here
the other stuff is myth
Whatever you do, do NOT use full throttle until the engine is completely warmed up. To me, this means at least 10 miles of "normal" driving. This is a good thing to try to avoid even after the breakin period.
I'm a little leery of that advice given in the mototuneusa thread. If that's how you want to break in a motorcycle or racing engine, go for it, but I wouldn't do it on a brand new stock engine in a vehicle that's going to be used as a daily driver. If you want to do that after doing a rebuild, fine, but be prepared to rebuild it again if something bad happens.

Good to know. My dad's picking up the truck this week and going to get the exhaust done. I'm sure whoever drives it will be tempted to gun it. It's so sad, I'm in the middle of Iraq and I'm worried about my truck while I'm not there. I guess that's why we're all here.
I had one of the best modular engine builders in the county build a new motor for my mustang. All he said was, don't go WOT for 100 miles and vary the RPMs. After that I changed the oil, took it to the dyno to get it tuned and have been beating the snot out of it ever since. Engine runs great! These modulars don't require much break-in, after 100 miles it's probably as broke in as it's gonna get.
