Upgrading the engine to V8

Greetings,

I have a 1999 4.2 V6 and am looking to bump up to a new, not rebuilt, V8. What sort of mechanic installed cost am I looking at?

uh I doubt you will find a mechanic that will do that type of work. Do it your self for the cost of the engine and tuning, and various other small parts

I would say out of the dark, about $1,500 in labor and about $2,000 for a 5.4l v8. $3,500...

But, that's only a guess.

If you got that kind of money to blow, either:

1. Get a new truck.
2. Get a turbo or supercharger.

doesnt he have to worry about the bell housing on the tranny? I thought they were different on the 4.2s compared to the 5.4s?

Sometimes people will make threads asking how to convert their 2WD trucks into 4x4s. They are always told to buy a 4WD truck.

My advice to you: Buy a truck with a V8.

You can do it, and it would probably be a fun project. It will go a LOT easier with a donor truck for all the needed parts - computer, wiring harness, exhaust, etc. This is not something an ordinary shop will do for you, it's more of a hobby when you do something like this. It's definitely cheaper to sell your truck and buy another one that already has a good running V8.

im with these guys, just buy a new truck. if my engine in my 97 blew tommorow thats what id do.cant see spending 2-3 k for a new motor for ae 10 year old truck.sell your truck now while its runs good and put that money towards a newer one.

Exactly - this is not something you would do for a daily driver, it's something you do for a hobby/project truck. If you even have to ask how much it would cost, don't do it.

why would you do it?

just sell your truck and buy one that has what you want. A swap like that just isnt worth it.

Just curious. What would be the cost difference of an engine swap and a supercharger?

Putting a blower on is a lot less hassle.
