check engine light on after running low fuel

I ran really low on fuel yesterday because I left my money at home. Anyway after filling up first thing this morning (the station is just around the corner) My 2001 f-150 4.9L started to mis a bit. Then on the way home tonight it still did it then the check engine light came on and would flash 39 times then stay solid. It did this about 5 cycles then stopped and just stayed lit solid.

I am thinking I need to change the feul filter. Just wondering if there is anything else this could be.

Thanks

stuart

either u sucked up gunk in the bottom of the tank and it made it past the filter and clogged and injector or u bought bad fuel.

How full did you fill the tank when you finally got to the station? Continual filling up the tank to full will saturate the char-coal canister and set of a hard code. The evaporator tank will need to be r&r'd if that's the case. Secondly the filter usually will not cause a C E L to come on (Usually) unless you pumped debris! But when is the last time it had routine maintenance? If that's the case, check the air also, just keep in mind, go where you last crapped, meaning what did you do that caused it to run the way it did? Maybe bad fuel, I have done this one in my F-350. You always want to pump fuel from the top of a hill. Gas stations that sit lower usually gather run-off and your chances of getting water are greater. Don't be afraid to stick your nose @ the fuel tank and smell for an old gas odor or the smell of kerosene. This will tell you if you need to drop the tank and flush. ### of problems can cause your issue but where I work, and something goes frightfully wrong, I always go where I lasted crapped, and usually I find it, the notorious buddy bug!

I only filled about half a tank. I did not run completly out by I had my fingers crossed on making it to the station. It is where we normally get gas and have never had a problem in fact my wife just got some out of the same pump tonight so I guess I will find out if it is the gas.

I just replaced the filter so I will see if that is it in the morning. I hope but I am not betting on it. I just replaced the plugs, air filter, and tranny filter on wed of last week and everything up until today was fine. Even ran fine all the way home yesterday when I was really low on gas.

Thanks for all the help

Exactly. Anything else is supposition. You might not have tightened the gas cap, for example.

The flashing (number of flashes) is irrelevant.

Considering that Autozone and other major parts stores read codes for you at no charge, this is a no-brainer.
