First oil change
First oil change
Right off the bat I'm going to say I tune 737's for a living, I've really never worked on more than a lawn mower engine at home.
I'm ready to tackle my first oil change on my 2007 xlt SC 4x4 and am contemplating switching to synthetic oil.
My question is I'm used to the old dino oil 10w30 and I'm confused with all the weight codes.
Could someone recommend a syn oil and a proper weight? Filter?
I'm not hard on my vehicles, just the usual freeway 30 mi to and from work and the occasional trip into the backwoods, mostly logging roads.

You need to do a search of the various subjects, you will find more reading than you want. I use what Ford recommended, 5-20 Motorcraft oil and a Motorcraft filter. The motorcraft oil is a blend.

I am a huge fan of the Castorl 0w30 synthetic (made in Germany). I used it in my 03 Cobra, and in my wifes new '07 Corolla. The 5.4 and 4.6 share the same design specs, so I am going to be using it in my truck at my first oil change. I am at 2000 miles now, so it will be soon.

Or Mobil1 5w-20..
Your biggest worry will be, how to take off the factory robot-installed oil filter

That's why I made a post bluejay432000, I was getting a little overwhelmed with all that people have posted.

Truthfully, I HATE flying, I think it is I see the people who build them.
I know we have a bazzilion inspections, reduntancy systems and such, just look around where you work.
I'm sure there are people that you work with that you wonder if they can use a knife and fork safely.

You will get as many opinions as there are members, but my personal recommendation is 5W20 Mobil 1 (either regular or EP) and a Mobil 1 filter, or 0W30 Amsoil Series 2000 and an Amsoil Ea filter. However, you cannot go wrong with the factory Motorcraft 5W20 semi-synthetic and a Motorcraft filter. Whatever you use, ensure it meets Ford specs for your engine.
Whatever you use, I recommend that you do not exceed the Ford-recommended change intervals while you are still on warranty, even if the oil manufacturer claims that you can go longer.
Be prepared for a hassle getting the factory filter off - it's installed WAY too tight.

ANY oil that meets the specs of your engine will perform to the specs of the engine. Going over spec, is not particularly helpful. Unless you do "over spec" stuff with your truck. Eg. revving to 7,000 rpm etc... So just regular dino oil works fine. I have right at 220,000 miles on my 97' 5.4, and it's still kicking.
