04 engine noise

Newbie here with a question that has probably been answered alot but after some searching I havent seen it. My 04 5.6 3v sounds like a diesel at idle. I went to trade it in today and the owner of the car lot told me he didnt want it because of this. He said it is the cam guides or something like that and it will eventually be terminal. Can someone tell me if he is right or full of it. I have noticed the ticking but just thought it was a quirk of the engine. Thanks Ron

he is full of it. it is something like the cam timing phaser, or cam phaser or somthing lke that. but other than just being somewhat annoying it wont harm anything. they changed it mid 05 i think. and i am also assuming you are talking about the 5.4

Do a search on cam phaser.

Dont know if it could damage anything. Realistically must be done by a mechanic.

I'm having this same issue, too. I just bought an '04 F150 Lariat Scab 5.4 Triton V8, and it sounds almost like a diesel. I didn't know if this was just typical, because this is the first Ford truck I've ever owned (always had Chevys before). I'll have to check into that cam phaser & see if what I can find out.

If anyone else has had this problem or knows what it might be, any info. would be greatly appreciated!

Post Fact or Fiction

Ive just stared a thread about starting my truck sounding like that!! However, ford states that its the oil filter i use not having a Anti drain back which prevents the oil filling up in the filter.. Although after everyones insight about this issue, Im thinking who ever told me that at Ford was full of @#$@.. After my truck warm up like two seconds its fine, however it sounds like its about to turn into a Diesel!!

What oil filter are you using? The dealer may be telling you the truth. Stick a Motorcraft in it along with the recommended 5W20 and if it still does it, then you have a case.
