Excessively Loud Engine?

Hello All,

I have 98 F-150 3 Door w/5.4L Triton. Over the past month or so my truck has been excessively loud when ever I'm giving it anything more than a moderate amount of gas. I did a little searching and found this could be normal or the sign of a locked up fan clutch on the radiator fan. The noise never goes away, it's always there when I give it some gas. It used to only be noticed at start up until recently. Is replacing the fan clutch something that's fairly easy to do? Normally my truck is pretty quiet. But, she's getting old. She's got 240k Miles on her now. But I haven't had ANY problems with her other than this for the most part. So any info on possible solutions is appreciated!

TIA!

Kinda vague there. Could be a leak in the exhaust?

Fans always turn, but it when not needed it is like a slipping clutch so they don't turn at full speed. If they get stuck on it will sound like a jet trying to get off the ground.

It's Fan Noise

Yah, it's fan noise.. I did some googling the other day and came up with a lot of people referring it it as "MACK Truck Syndrome" lol.. That's exactly what it sounds like. So it's possible that the fan clutch has locked up? I did notice this happen once before and the fan was loud for about a week then it went away. It's been over a month now and it's still there. So, to remedy this, one could just replace this clutch I'm assuming? The motor itself runs great. No rough idling, no weird acceleration, just a loud fan.

Thanks for the Replys!

I know the sound your talking about - I really can't recall the last time I heard it though. I here other vehicles take off with that wind tunnel sound and it gets worse as they speed up. Sounds bad. I think mine did it for a awhile after I bought it in 98 - I was towing something all the time - at least 6000lbs.

The 97 - 00 5.4L W/ off road / tow package have dual core radiators and run pretty cool when there's nothing behind them..Prolly why I don't here it now.
