one other thing to look for is the exhaust manifolds...both 4.6 and 5.4 are noted for having cracked/rusted exhaust manifolds, both sides, but I think the drivers side is most common. Even though this is a very common problem, it is NOT cheap. The studs usually are so rusted or broken they need to be replaced, and getting out of the head can be very tricky! Most dealers will charge around 700-800 per side!
I have a 97 4.6 5 speed,4x4,est cab, 8 foot box, had to replace both sides. But other than a few minor things, great truck, rusty but only 88,000.
I pull a 88 Shasta 19 foot TT, loaded is probably around 4500 lbs. Pulls well for 281 CI engine ina heavy truck.
