Question Gas Mileage??

Well here we go, had my 06 in to the dealer yesterday for a few problems. The biggest problem was the gas mileage I have been getting. Most of my driving is on the hwy. On a recent trip on holidays I checked my fuel consumption and to my surprise I am only getting average 13-14 m/g!! My truck has a 5.4, only 25,000km, K&N filter, Magnaflow exhaust and has been babied since new with all regular service work preformed. Now I understand that under perfect driving conditions I should be getting at least 18-19 on hwy. Well with a tail wind and going 110km/h I would think I shoukld at least reach 18m/g?? Nope 14 was the best I got. This is without towing anything, 2 people in the cab and obeying the speed limit. The dealer say everything is fine........ya right. I also noticed that the tips on my new stainless exhaust system are very black inside. This would tell me the truck is running a bit rich...yes/no??
If anybody else is experiencing this problem and has a solution, please reply.

Cheers, D

Don't feel bad about the mileage. Just last year the MGP's aren't what the dealers are advertizing, that's why they said it was not big deal it's all ok. The
dealers are lying to the customers to make the sales. What octane fuel are you using and was your A/C on. MPG's (what I've heard are not using a/c when @ test) this will eat your mileage) are measuered on a perfect flat surcace and if it's done on a dyna it will give great mileage because of not wind resistance. When I travel, I let the tail gate down, this reduces a lot of drag and acts like a boat tail. Also for every 100 lbs in your vehicle you are supposed to loose 1 to 2 miles per gallon. Just for your information!!!

I average about 12. I might get 14 all highway. I think your truck is acting "normal". Take in consideration it's a heavy truck with a V-8. If you wanted good MPG ya should of got a smaller truck with a 4 cylinder.

Sorry man

Don't expect to get any better mileage. You are actually dead on according to consumer reports. These guys reprot actual mileage. Additionally your vehicle is a bit heaveir than 97-2004 models. Driving with the tail gate down leads to worse mileage. You create more drag that way. You would think it would be the opposit but the vortex of rotating air created in the bed with the gate up lends to lower air pressure aboive the cab creating.....less drag.
Some other factors are your tire size and you rear end. If you have less than a 3:55 then your truck may be working harder than it needs to when getting up to speed. I can get a solid 415 miles on 23 gallons at 70 on the highway. I have done it many times. But around town, it drops to 12. I have a 3.08 rear end and a 4.6 with stock rims and 275/60/r16s. K&N hypertech 93 tune, JBA cat back single exit exhaust
It is as it is buddy. Troyer tunes may help you a bit.

Egads!

Poor mileage?

Welcome to the party, pal.

Now you will throw away a couple of hundred bucks every pay check for mods in hopes of giving you an extra mile per gallon.

I just invested in a Tonneau top. In the neighborhood of $200, the Truxedo seemed reasonable. If I could get an extra mile from every gallon, then I can gain about 27 miles per tank. That's almost two gallons of gas. At $3.25 per gallon, that saves me up to $6.50 a tank. With 52 weeks in a year, the cover will pay for itself in a year or less.

The real advantage to the Tonneau is that I have the most trunk space in comparison to all the other soccer moms.

What are you gonna' do? Tow your boat with a Honda?

Okeedokee!!

Thanx guys but i wasn't looking for a flaming session. I love the truck and have had previous year F-150's give me better mileage. I will definitley put up with the gas mileage, just thought someone out there was doing better than me?? Oh ya I have a cap on the back and don't need to put the tailgate down or buy a cover.

Just checking in with owners not crappy sales/dealer people!

Thanx people! Have a good one.

I hear ya fellow canuck, on my dad's 06, 07 Harley trucks as well as his 07 fx4, he got about 16-17 maybe 18 on a good day, not 13. Can't tell ya whats up. Even on my recent trip to N. Carolina through mountains and a/c on, I was pulling off about 17 mpg's and kicking it in the *** going up those mounts too. Maybe it was that sweet 93 octane the yankies have, god bless them and their cheaper, higher octane than canadian gas (91 at best here avg). I'm kinda stunned, on average the 04 and newer 5.4's get better than 2v 5.4's.

Hey, You didn't mention the cap. Right there is where your milage is going. That cap weights and easy 300lbs. I can almost bet if you removed that cap the back of your truck will rise an 1' or so. I wasn't trying to bad mouth or "flame" you just letting you know your not alone with the poor milage.

True dat. I've heard more than one story about this being the case, not to mention a friend of mine now gets better mileage in his Ram 2500 4x4 after removing his cap.

Read this thread. There are people getting excellent mileage out of these trucks:

I understand these being somewhat heavy trucks, but theyare by no means a HEAVY truck. My last truck was a 2004 2500 Dodge Cummins (23MPG HWY) and before that was a 2000 F350 Dually V10 (12MPG City)so I don't understand why everyone is saying it is normal for a truck this heavy. Come on guy's these are still just 1/2 ton trucks with a somewhat small V8. We should be getting better than this.

I'm dissappointed with my trucks mileage..

I know its an extended cab 4x4 but 14 mpg? I had a chebby back about 10 years ago that would get 25 mpg an the freeway. I like the Ford I have now much better but the other day I'm talking to a chebby owning pal of mine and he's letting me have it about how he get 26 on the freeway. He's got the same options I have on my Ford. Sucks. I just put new plugs and motoblue cops on it and it seems to run better a bit. Hopefully it improves the mileage. This is ridicules.. I was expecting it to get at least 17.

GM tends to get better mileage on their V8's. however I find it very hard to believe that you could get more than 20 or 21 out of the 4.8 or 5.3 liter v8s chevy offers. You will need to come up with some more proof than that. My nieghboors 5.3 gets 18 on the hwy, 20 if he keeps it under 65.

I have a 05 4x4 and I am getting 19 mpg at 65 mph. I have a corsa exhaust system, AEM intake, under drive pulleys, jack rabbit bed cover and electric fans. I use the cruse control all the time. I can be in the low 20s if I wanted to go 55. It cost money to save money, if you are going to keep your truck for 200,000 or 300,000 miles then it will pay for itself.
