Cleaning intake ports and Valves
Might as well put in a good plug for the dealership here - considering how you usually only see complaints around here.
As I said, I have to run up to Chicago Thursday with a trailer. I just moved here, my tools are not unpacked yet, and I don't know any shops around here at all. I figured to avoid hassles I'd try the local dealer. Went in about 3:30 yesterday afternoon to talk to the service advisor. 82k - misfiring under load with no CEL - when was the last time the fuel filter was changed? About 10k ago - okay, probably spark plug time. Wires? maybe - we can check those. Do you want us to do a full computer diagnosis ($79.95)? Sure, wouldn't hurt. I have a K&N - think the MAF might be fouled? It's possible, but that *should* throw a code. I can get you in tomorrow, do you want AM or PM? Let's go for AM, I'll drop it off tonight and throw the key in the box.
They called me at 8:45 this morning with full diagnosis and estimate. Plugs, wires, and dirty intake system. Plugs, wires, and a BG job, $575. Should have it done by noon. It was done at 1pm (close enough) and the bill was $573 and change. Not cheap, plugs were $7.95 each and the wire set was $120, labor $76.95/hr. (Non-union shop, by the way) I expected that and it would have cost me more to have it done by an independent in the Chicago area.
Bottom line, Joplin Ford is professional, friendly, courteous, and competent. I'm confident if I need their services again I'll be treated right and the job will be done right.

damn 4.2L plugs and wires are easy to change on those! lol there all in standard location
I know..........but no tools! They may be in "standard" location but stringing the wires around the back of the engine to the driver's side is not THAT easy. I also didn't want to be at the mercy of the local parts stores to find quality replacements, I *know* the dealer uses OEM Motorcraft. No time to mail order OEM.
I also wanted to make sure there wasn't some other problem that might strand me on the road - towing a trailer and traveling with a 4 year old, cost really wasn't an issue. I don't know exactly how necessary the BG job was, but the way I look at it, it sure can't hurt.

damn wish i had the money to front on something like that
I don't overextend myself, I don't spend money on toys for my truck or anything else, I only buy what I *NEED*. I paid $7700 cash for it a year ago and I don't run up credit cards, all I have is a debit card. I live well within my means. Did I enjoy giving the dealer $575? Heck no! However, I do what I have to do.

the deposits may come from the EGR and PCV systems.. but the detergents in the fuel help clean that off.... DUH
