what's the difference?

i have 98 F150 with a 4.6L. i am wanting to do some upgrades and was wondering what is the difference between the 4.6L in my truck and the 4.6L in a Mustang GT? Also are the parts interchangable and will the aftermarket Mustang parts work on my truck? one more ques. how do i tell if i have the PI heads? Any info would help and i appreciate all responces.

You don't have PI heads. The cam is the biggest internal difference between truck & car engines, but there are several others including the intake manifold, TB, PCM programming...

Im assuming alot of the parts would swap over, although depending on what it was it might take a bit of work.

You have to do the maintenance FIRST.

I think 01 and later heads are PI on the trucks. The cams are exactly the same between the mustang and truck, at least 02-03. I know because I grabbed a set of heads off an 03 mustang and put them on my 02 truck. I checked all the numbers before buying anything. The only difference between the two motors was in the intake manifold. The truck manifold has longer runners, thus it makes more torque. I'm not too sure about the MAF, but the throttle bodies are the same as well.

As far as a 98 model goes, I'm pretty sure that everything is interchangeable, as long as it comes from a stock GT and not a cobra, as the cobra is a DOHC engine. You can actually get more out of a set of non PI heads. Port and polish, valve job, springs and retainers, they'll make more power than the PI heads would if you did the same things.

Yeah, you can swap out for the PI heads if you want. What I was saying is that if you do the work to the heads you can actually get more power from the non PI heads, but in their stock form the PI heads give more power.
