oil and lube question

Its time now that I get my oil changed on my f150.. it has 119000 miles on it and have had it for about 20... I never done a tune up... or lube.. I dont really even know what a lube job is on a car other then just lube the U joints... also.. when you go take your car to a palce and get an oil change.. do they change the oil filter also? and how much do they charge to lube also? and should I get a tune up because I noticed a drop in performance and gas milage over past 5000 miles.

I sure hope you've had your oil changed in the 20K miles you've driven it, otherwise that is definitely why your truck is losing power and you should get that changed ASAP!! The oil should really be changed every 3k-5k miles. And yes, the lube place should change your filter, it's common.

ha... nice first post.

You most definitely need a new filter. I know some people that take the time to put a big scratch on the oil filter before taking it in just to make sure the lube place actually changes it. (no scratch, must be new).

me, I just do it all my self. That way I know its a new filter and it was done right.

It is insulting to call him a girl...even girls know they need to change the oil more often than every 20k miles!! haha

Everybody has to start learning at some point. Welcome to the forum!

I change my oil every 5k to 8k miles using synthetics.

You will need to grease your prop joints and likely the diffs / tranny and transfer case too.

Wow, this thread degraded fast! Anyway, change the frickin oil, get all the u-joints and ball joints lubed. Or have it checked to see if they need to be replaced first.

I know it's not this site, but it does have a couple how-to articles that you can read as far as maintenance goes(nothing on oil changes though, I guess they think that's common knowledge and don't need to detail it). As far as I would recommend, if you know someone who knows what they are doing, ask if they can help you and show you how to do it, because I'd hate for you to get to some point and then realize you don't have some tool or aren't sure what to do next and leave yourself stranded. That first time that someone helps you out is great and it makes things much easier.

Just to prove my point, so far every time I change my oil in my truck, I have had to take the air intake off to get to it(I don't put the filter on too tight either), I've even had to go at it with a screwdriver to get it off(I now buy K&N Gold filters with the nut on the end so I can use a socket to get them off). Whatever you end up doing, good luck.

Hey buzzsaw714 - every man should know how to change his own oil (and oil filter). Ask around and you can probably find someone to show you how once or twice. Maybe even one of the many people from Houston on this site could show you... I know I see alot of them posting on here.

I agree with risupercrewman - the best way to learn is with your Dad. But if thats not an option, try to find someone else to show you.

While you're under the hood changing the oil, here's a few more things to do:
-- be sure to top off the wiper fluid (I recommend the orange Rain-ex fluid)
-- check the radiator fluid (should be fluid at the bottom of the radiator cap - DO NOT open while hot)
-- check the tranny oil (should be a dipstick with lines)
-- check the brake fluid level (do not add any unless it is below the MIN line)
-- check the air filter (blow out dust / replace as needed)
-- check your tire pressure (ya ya ya, I know the tires aren't under the hood... just a good time to do it)

Good luck with the truck!

There is nothing wrong with taking it to a properly and well run oil change place to get this routine service done. They will change the oil and filter, lube what needs to be lubed, and check the rest of the fluids. I don't bother changing my own oil any more - I don't mind paying to have it done and it saves me a lot of hassles. I take it to a local Mobil 1 Express Lube joint that has a good reputation in the area.
