Mexican made cars/engines are just fine. There is bound to be problems at any plant now and then. My focus engine was made in mexico and it is still ticking like a watch with over 60,000 miles
I was in a similar situation as the OP recently, and I opted for the 4.6.
The Ward's guide swayed me a lot.
The fact the 4.6 uses regular spark plugs did too.
I'm not unhappy with the power at all, especially coming from (initially) a 2.3 Ranger and then a 4.2 F150.
It will get regeared sometime next year, however. It is 3.55LS now.

twin force is the twin turbo engines ford is rumored to be bringing out
* 260 horsepower for the 2.5 liter I4 (likely to appear in the 2009 Fusion sedan)
* 350-420 horsepower for the 3.5 liter V6 (likely to appear in the Mustang and F150 later in 2009)
* 400 horsepower for the possible 5.0 liter V8
* 650 lb-ft of torque for the 6.2 liter V8 (likely to land in the F150 and Super Duty as a diesel alternative).

Frankly, the 5.4 is under powered for its segment, over hyped, and not necessarily a reliable platform. When the new Twin Force engines come out I hope the 4.6 is still available. It's still the only US engine to pass the European Autobahn Test.
