4.6L to 5.4L swap on 2002 Screw
I have read the many posts about the swap, but most of them are swaps in the older non PI motors. I have a 4.6 PI motor with COP ignition and it is slowly going out, it still runs pretty good, but when I change the oil, I can see metal dust in the oil. My truck is clean, so I am either gonna buy a rebuilt 4.6L or I could go ahead and get the 5.4L since I am replacing the motor anyway. I already have an XCal II, so I suspect I could send it back to Mike to have it reprogrammed. I know the 5.4L would bolt up to my AOD tranny, but would I have to change the ECM? and would my engine wire harness work with the 5.4L since my 4.6L has the COP system? What all would fit from my 4.6L to the 5.4L? Would I have to buy new pulleys and fan shroud, brackets, accessories or anything like that? and if I buy a long block, would my intake and fuel rails and TB from the 4.6L fit? Any help would be appreciated, I would much rather have a 5.4L in there than the 4.6L. Thanks.

metal flakes in the oil wow u musta put that through some abuse! any rattling or grinding noise how many miles and what oil are u using?
I have what we think is a timing chain rattle, but no grinding, and the truck still runs strong despite the rattle? I bought the truck with 100K on it and I have used MC 5-20w with K&N or MC filters. I changed the spark plugs a couple of months ago, and they weren't bad at all for being a 138K motor. I suspect the 5-20w was a bit light for the high mileage motor, I changed the oil two days ago and used the Castrol high mileage 10-40W with a MC filter just to keep the oil pressure up. I have driven it to a couple of stealerships in the area, but they won't give me much for it? So I guess I have to replace the motor. I have 143.8K right now, but sure runs like it would get over 200K. I dunno, and I am so desperate right now, hoping to go 5.4L just to be happy with the power for the rest of its days.
A 2002 4.6 to 5.4 swap is the easiest to do. Pull the old engine and install the new engine. Use the vacuum lines and IAC and PCV lines from the 5.4 but the wire harness from the 4.6 as you are sure that it works. Lengthen the IAC wires so they reach to the rear of the throttle body elbow and lengthen the oil pressure sending unit wire. You will still need to have a muffler shop adjust the exhaust to make it fit on t he 5.4 collectors.
