1992 with crazy coolant issues

I've got a 1992 F150 4x4 with a 5.0 and a 5spd. manual tranny. My coolant reservoir is overflowing with coolant and some kind of rusty brown crap that I'm guessing is probably stop leak. I bought it used, so who knows what's in there. Anyway, I've been trying to figure out why it's overflowing. The guage shows normal temperature. What could be causing this? I'm thinking thermostat or water pump. Any ideas would be appreciated. Steve if you read this post, you've been right almost every time, so I'm hoping this one will be simple. Thanks. -Al

update

while I was checking the water pump, I noticed that my AC compressor pulley would run, then stop and click for about 2 seconds, then keep running. It did this about every 30 seconds before I shut everything off. I'm not moving my truck until I get it fixed. Something serious is about to happen, I can just feel it coming! Thanks again for the help. -Al Nobles

Check for a collapsed hose, also. I was leaning towards the T-stat, till I read where the temp gauge was reading normal......

Could be something as simple as a bad radiator cap.

update #2

Thanks for the advice. I went ahead and changed the T-stat and flushed the whole system about 4 times. There was a ton of rust colored crap in there. I'm not sure if that will do it, but at least I can rule out the T-stat if it doesn't. Also, there is a sensor of some kind right next to the EGR valve that is ticking. It's never been ticking before or I would have noticed it. Does anybody know what sensor this is so I can replace it? It's right at the front of the EGR but not attatched to the EGR and has an electrical connection and vaccum lines coming out of the bottom of it. -Al Nobles

Coolant should be changed every year or 2, regardless of mileage. Don't use "long-life" coolant; it doesn't last as long as regular. Don't use ready-mix; they're charging you WAAAAY too much for the water, and you end up with ~1/2 as much coolant as with concentrate. I hope you changed the cap when you did the t-stat.
