Pros/Cons of UD Pullies?

Mac has a set (I like the red ones ) for $139. Aside from manufacturer, what are the benefits or negatives with pullies? I have read that the power steering is a little sluggish when at idle and that the idle needs to be set up to about 800 rpm (which I can do via Xcal). Also, electic output from the alternator may be affected, which is a concern with efans. Lastly, how much does the water pump pulley affect flow/cooling?

Any thoughts are appreciated.

I have a set on my 2001, F-150

the power windows are a bit slow at idle but no other issues.

I am running a 180* thermostat but that came after I had the pulleys on for about 6 months. Texas gets hot and my truck runs normal all the time before and after the 180* thermostat.

do you want some pics of what they look like??

Pics would be great, thanks.

I'm just trying to lighten the load on my Ex's 4.6 as much as I can. Make better use of available power. The Xcal + CAI makes more power by eating more gas. I'd like to do it the other way around.

Sometimes I think we are becoming HP snobs. I mean, really. 200+ hp! That's a TON of power. We need to find better ways of transmitting and using that.

So yes, pics of UD pullies and any thoughts about installation would be welcome.

Underdrive pulleys

Waterman,I've got the Mac UD on my 2000F-150,I've got the 4.6.They work really well and were pretty straight forward as far as the install goes.I've never had an issue w/cooling or charging, but when I'm @ a red light with all the accessories on,a/c,radio,fan,blinkers,lights on,they seem to drag just a bit until I step on the gas and bring them up to speed.I would recommend them. For install pics,go to Mac performance.com and click on the Ford truck section and follow it to the UD pulleys, nice pics and description on the install.Mac has some nice stuff for the Ford truck, check them out,by the way,I got the blue pulleys, they look great.Good luck.

here is what my titanium ones look like installed:

I needed a speed gun / imp[act wrench to get the alternator one loose, they are a straight forward install following the directions

how about performance?

Have you noticed any improvement in HP or MPG? I keep hoping to raise the mpg's. So far the only thing that did that for me was the efans. The tuner and CAI added nice HP, but the mpgs stayed the same or droped .5 or so.

Do these pullies help the MPG's?

Hey waterman, I don't know if you have a cat-back exhuast but if you're looking for some mpg gains, plus maybe a few hp, then definitely get yourself a cat-back.

I gained 1.8 mpg highway when I put a Borla SI/SO on, others here have reported the same or better with Borla, Magnaflow, Bassani, Corsa..

Not to even mention how bitchin' it's gonna sound.. LOL

Usually the biggest(?) complaint is at idle the voltage drops down to nearly "engine off" voltage so some accessories are sluggish or if you have a powerful sound system it may "skip" a bit. Otherwise, you should be fine. Big deal, the power windows are a little slow.

I got quite a bit better with a tuner, CAI and cat back on top of the pulleys even now with the 24# injectors I can get about 26mpg on the highway (@70mph in Texas, 93 octane and troyer tuned)

Wow! After my TP tune w/ 93 octane, I seemed to drop a little in mpg's. I have an 03 Ex, 4.6l with the Xcal and AF1, + efans. Picked up 1 mpg maybe a little more with the fans. Best mpg was 18 in bone stock. Best mpg's with tunes + CAI was about 15.5. Best mpg w/tune+CAI+fans = 17.1 (mostly highway).

Is it possible that the Exp is set up so much differently or weighs so much more that I can't get the mpgs up there any higher?

26 mpg is grrrrreat!

one other thing...

I have read here somewhere that to compensate for the slow idle alternator issue, you can turn up the idle rpm's to about 800 to help w/ ps and electric output. Are there any issues associated with doing this?

i dunno, mine is still @ stock idle, I'm sure "rolling idle" could be a concern

I've got 3.73 gears and I don't stomp it much, but when I do it drinks more fuel and driving @ 80mph brings the mileage way down
