Engine Woes
Hello,
I am new to the site and wanted to ask for some help. Last week I bought a used 2005 F150 Supercrew 5.4L with 20K miles. Drove it home 10 miles. Two days later drove it for the first time 5 miles when the engine light came on. Checked gas cap and etc... it was not the issue.
Dropped off the truck Sunday night and it has been there all week! Dealer says it has a "lean code". Checked vac lines and so on. They decided to replace intake. Call today to ask if I filled tank with E85. Dealer filled tank and confirmed no E85. Service is at a loss to what the cause is....think maybe injectors?
Any ideas? I have totaly lost my confidece in this truck and have only driven it home and back to the dealer!!! Worried what might go wrong next and if they will even find the cause of the current issue.
Thanks

Dealer just called. They tested the gas and it is E85. The dealer had filled the tank with the wrong gas! They draining the tank and filling with fresh. They said that this will not cause any short/long term effect to then engine?
Not sure I believe that?

That's BS. Older fuel pumps/filters are not designed to work properly with E85 as they do with standard gasoline. I'd demand they replace the fuel pump and filter and do a full fuel system clean out and then fill it back up with REGULAR gasoline. E85 burns hotter (that's one way it reduces emissions by burning so hot that it dissolves carbon deposites and helps burn the fuel/air mixture completely).
I dont know. I could be wrong but i would think that the dealer is probably right and it wouldnt cause any big problems. E85 is basically ethanol fuel and even regular gas has some ethanol in it, just not near as much. I couldnt see it being a big problem with the filter and pump, Especially if youve only driven it 20-30miles.

If your fuel filter is not capable of filtering ethonal in the E85 mixture, the filtering element will harden and break up into the fuel. That's why they warn you NOT to use E85 if your vehicle isn't set for it or they put warnings on fuel pumps that their gas is E85. It's not something to just brush off.
