engine oil
engine oil
I have a 2001 screw 4x4 with a 4.6l. I am thinking about switching to synthetic motor oil and my question is what are the pros/cons in doing this and what oil is the best for my truck. I have come across people on here using royal purple? My owners manual calls for 10w-30 i believe, so if i switch to synthetic should i get 10w-30 or 5w-30? What would the diff be in the different oil weight>?
You sure about that?

Your manual calls for 5w20 more than likely. What have you been putting in it?
How many miles on your rig?
pros: you name it. can't go wrong with synthetics. I'm not going to retype what you can readily find on any synthetic website. Go to Amsoil, Royal Purple, Mobil, Redline.....they all have reasons to use synthetics.
cons: None, unless you are worried about the increase in costs. But hey, it's only money, right?
If you have already been using a 10w30 or 5w30 mineral oil in your truck, then you may just want to stick with that weight. I'd opt for 10w in summer and 5w in winter.
What is the best oil for YOUR truck? Well, only your truck motor will tell you that after you've done some oil analysis. Me personally, I don't think you can go wrong with just about any synthetic, but, Amsoil is known for their add packs. I've had excellent lab reports with Amsoil and Royal Purple.
only 60,000 miles on my rig. thanks for the info. greatly appreciate!the last few oil changes ive gotten done were at wal-mart and i believe they put 10w-30. ive been so busy renovating my new house and havent had time to change me own oil like i normally do. but i am moving into my house this week and should have more time to do my own changes. i am going to switch 5w-30 synthetic and double check my manual as well.
Probably the best buy for synthetic at Walmart is the Walmart brand of 5w30 synthetic for about $13/5 qt. container. Second to that would be any of the following:
Penzoil Platinum, Mobil 1, Castrol Syntec.
All available in 5 quart containers at WMart and roughly priced just under $20.
Then theirs Mobil 1 Extended performance for ~ $27.
If you plan on sticking with the 5w30 wt oil, then you may look at Mobil 1 Truck and SUV in the 5 qt. container.
Good luck.
