Unhappy Broken Spark Plug

I was putting in new spark plugs in my 4.6 and the guy at the stealership told me 80 ft. lbs. I thought this must be too much, but i did it anyway, not thinking twice about it. The spark plug broke off, and now the threaded part is in the head. how can i get this out without taking off the head?

I would go to NAPA or Carquest and match up a extractor bit with a long extension. Also wait for more advise from here before jumping in. What plug # was it?

Well I thought it was the head gaskets, but I took off the intake manifold gaskets and found out those leaked bad. So I took them to the stealership and they told me those and bad plugs were my problem, not head gaskets. and for the one wondering, it was #5

80 ft/lbs sounds like the torque for the rims...

Remember... this is no different than changing out the sparkplugs on say a lawn tractor... or even small engines... they are just simple sparkplugs in an engine... heck, they will still work hand tightened, but you've got a risk of them coming out causing other problems. Basically, 12 to 16 ft/lbs is like enough to turn a cork in a winebottle with a corkscrew. It isn't much.

Get another spark plug and cut it off where the other plug broke. If the middle of the plug came out and only the hollow threaded part is stuck you might be able to use an "easy out" to remove this piece. Use the cut off plug to get the right size. Worth a try before you remove the head.

Don't torque @ 10' lbs lol - They will fly out of there in no time. 12-16 is spec.

If I used a torque wrench on those I would put them @ 16. I just give em a good 1/4 - 1/2 turn after there snugged myself.

If the easy-out won't remove it cold - start it on seven cylinders , warm the head a bit .

Worth a shot before removing the head.
