Strange smell

Experienced a new strange smell today with truck. I own a 2003 F150 Supercrew FX4, and I heard a strange sound near the exhaust in the back of the truck when the transmission was engaged in drive. I eased the truck's front wheels up against a curb, left the truck in drive and got out to investigate the sound. I was outside for maybe 30 seconds to a minute and I got in and shut the truck off and there was a strange nasty burning smell outside the truck. I have never experienced that smell before, and on a second later investigation of the sound it occured again. Truck runs fine, and the smell left when I drove away. Is there a difference in a curb holding the truck when it is in drive as opposed to the brakes holding it? Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks.

Austin

I was being very careful while doing this. It wasn't an oil burning smell, or rotten egg smell, but at first I thought some wire or piece of foam was melting under the hood. It didn't have the smell like hot brake pads or a clutch burning, but it was a smell I had ever experienced.
