EGR code

I just went and got a read and was told " EGR insufficient flow detected " but I didn't see what code it was. So I'll clean it out and check for leaks?
I have a 2001 4.6
In the V6 forum, they talk about a DPFE.
Ok, help me DPFE? What's that? Where is it? I haven't even looked for the EGR valve yet actually.... pics would be great.
For the record, I signed up for this site originally in the summer of 2000. I guess I got deleted at some point for being inactive. I had hundreds of posts. Not 10....

Ok, the EGR Insufficient flow is code 0401. More than likely your problem is the DPFE sensor. The EGR valve is located right behind the throttle body and has a vacuum line in the top of it. There is a metal tube screwed into it that connects to the exhaust manifold on the driver's side. The DPFE sensor will either be located directly on that tube, hooked up with two small rubber tubes like so.....

or it will be screwed down to the same plate as the vacuum solenoid, but still connected with those two rubber tubes.

I'm betting that the DPFE is your problem. I had the same code come up on mine, even after taking the whole intake manifold apart and cleaning out all of the orifices. I finally changed the sensor and no more problems. You can get them from an auto parts store for 20-30 bucks, but Ford has a newer version that is not prone to the same problems as the ones already in circulation. Not sure on the price of it though. Hope this helps.

Countryboy241, thanks.... the description and pics are exactly what I hoped for. This DPFE sensor isn't something that can be cleaned up/out and put back? After I replace it, could you take a guess how long before the CEL goes off?

Torkum, I did do a search and the only thing I came up with was in the V6 forum so I needed to post here. ????

It wouldn't hurt to take the egr tube off and clean it and make sure there are no large carbon buildups, but replacing the DPFE sensor is the only way to fix that. Just take the negative battery cable off for about 15 min. and the computer will reset itself. When you start it back up, just let it idle for a few minutes before driving it. If your light comes back on, go get it checked and if it's still a 0401, there's something stopped up somewhere.

The two guys at Pep Boys could not figure out what a DPFE sensor was.???
They came up with a part EGR631 but was out of stock so we couldn't look at it.
I'll do the suggested search now to look into it.

It's also called - presure feedback exhaust sensor in some listings , but I'm surprised they didn't know .

If you searched , you should have found something like this .

"I'll try to explain this another way .

Ford updated their DPFE Sensors recently because of premature failures. The catch is , you can only aquire the updated DPFE's from the dealerships.

Sure , third party auto suppliers offer them with a lifetime warranty , but do you really want to deal with a return and the hassle when it fails ?"

It took me about 30 seconds from the thread below..

yep, I found it. I do know at least I have the little plastic one. Not the aluminum one that can be taken apart and cleaned..... with limited success?
Can the plastic one be taken apart? I didn't want to force it and bust it.
I tried just spraying cleaning fluid through it but none came out the other hole.

Bottom line, buy the DPFE from Ford. Before you buy one, find yours and make sure the hoses are all connected to it and not leaking and reseat the electrical connector.

Thanks everybody.
I sprayed it out and reset the plug and hoses and diconnected the battery to reset it. Let's see what happens.....
This is a truck that I put a grand total of 1200 miles, thats HUNDRED not thousand, in the last year. I guess time is as big a factor in maintanance as miles unfortunately. It only has 60k on it since buying it in 2000 I've been using the Mobil 1 15k miles or 12 months extended oil since it came out and I hated changing it at the one year mark with only 1200 miles on it

Just a quick very long over due reply. Spraying it out didn't do a thing. I ended up going to AutoZone and the guy had trouble coming up with one that said 2001 but the 2002 and up one was visually a perfect match. $50 later and over a month now and all is well.
For the record, it shows my sign up date as 8/05. Not sure why but I signed up in 8/00 to research buying my 01 in Oct/2000.
I still know when I need some info for a repair or maintenance, this is the place to come.
