98 F150 Fuel/Ignition issue.

Allright.. have a 98 f150.. 4.6L.

Truck broke down about a year ago I havnt gotten around to fixing it as I have been battling cancer over the past year and simply couldnt drive it anyways. So basically truck broke down... Driving 3,000 miles across country it died 20 minutes from the final destination not long after we got gas. I'm wondering if there was a lot of mixed crap in that fuel and maybe it broke off some rust in the tank and is causing problems.

Truck has good spark through all the plugs I even replaced both coils about a year and a half ago one was bad so I swapped out the old good one to make sure that I didnt have one causing problems - no change. so I looked into the fuel line even put a bit of fuel down the intake and that got it going so it was an obvious fuel delivery issue. I swapped out filter, no go. Engine tries to turn over but will not fire unless I try the fuel down the intake. It has 180,000 miles on it everythings original so I swapped out the fuel pump.

Now it starts but it is very week. Very rough idle.. Press in on the gas and it cuts the engine so I'm presuming there's not enough pressure.

I'm decent with repairing general things on cars.. brakes, radiators, water pumps you name it simple crap like that but there's a lot of crap ford puts in these that I dont have tools for like testing the fuel pressure at the fuel rail. I'm eyeing the fuel pressure regulator is there any way of testing that to see if its bad before dropping 80 bucks on a new one and it may not be the issue?

Sounds like your fuel pump is going out. Without tools to test like a fuel pressure gauge, its gona be hard to know for sure. When you turn the key on and the fuel cap off can you hear the pump prime?

X2
The fuel pump will most likely sound very weak.I am betting on a weak pump also. The only way to know for sure is with a fuel pressure gauge. The fuel pressure regulator can be cheacked with a gauge, hook the gauge to the schrader valve, start the truck cheack pressure and then disconnect the vaccum line to the regulator, fuel pressure should rise close to 10psi as soon as vaccum is unplugged.
Also a quick cheack for vaccum from the regulator to the throttle body, unplug the vaccum line from the regulator and see if there is vaccum going to the TB.With a gauge you can cheack this stuff. There is min requirements for fuel pressure if you decide on a gauge
