Project In The Works
Project In The Works
Hey my fellow Ford boys hows it going? I kind of feel like I am hogging the board here but annyways as lots of you guys probably know I own a 1997 F-150 Super Cab 4x4 with a 4.6L V8. It has over 300k on it and I want to start a project truck for off roading. I am in the works of getting the motor running its a rebuilt engine from ford that blew up on me with only 50k and I rebuilt it again and am in the process of getting it running so the engine is good. The body has a coup[le very tiny rust spots hardly noticeable and the fram etc is in awesome condition some of the under body of the truck is still coated with that black finish and it rides very solid. The old guy I bought it off drove it on highway only. I also rebuilt the 4x4 system too. Anyways I want all you guys to list me some things to get me started. Stuff like power addons but I wanted to keep the engine naturally aspired. I have an exhaust with the cats cut its dual all the way back from the manifolds (plan on getting headers soon!) so just list me everything from motor addons to suspension parts. I am thinking this could get fun so let me hear your 2 cents worth.
When I rebuilt my engine I put these pistons back in. Do you think I will see any gains at all in hp or torque (when i get the engine running right)?

Also, which air intake system would be the best to get. Does your MAS and the other sensor thingy just plug right into these air intake systems?

A little advice - get a cold air intake.

ok well those are good fer horsepower and torque ideas but you said it will be an offroad vehicle rite??? if so wat kind of terrain are u looking at??? wat size tires??? GEARS will make the most difference and while you are in there mite as well put in some traction adders. the best offroad trucks are built from the ground up literally start with the ground u will run on then go up the truck from there sorry to rant just had to put in my two cents everyone wants power but if it only spins the tires in mud or on wet rocks it not helpin much
for the 4x4 option, your ideal setup for tractions probably going to be something like a detroit locker with nospin or whatever. 4wdcentral has them for about 650 shipped.
also for your front end i would highly suggest a selectable locker.
if your keeping a 4.6 in it and going with 35" or larger i would suggest 4.88 gears. sure they are a little steep on the freeway but you wanna play and have some extra flexing room?
how hard core you wanna go in the suspension dept? articulation? 4-link it.

I don't want to go crazy hard core with it its going to be a gradual build up. I won't be mud bogging it in 5 foot mud holes or nothin. What I want is a truck that is safe and good for the highway, but be able to go over some off road terrain too like old logging roads and stuff ya know and be able to handle fairly tough obsticles that a stock truck wouldn't be able to handle. I want to be able to leave my buddies with their newer stock trucks ya know almost for bragging rights if anything.
