5.4L reliability question

I'm looking to buy a '04 F-150 Lariat SCrew with the 5.4L. But, it has 94k miles on it. What are your experiences with the 5.4L with regards to longevity? I'm assuming these were mostly highway miles since the truck only 3yrs old.

thanks for your time.

Make them change the plugs. As long as it runs good and oil change reciepts can be produced I wouldnt hesistate as long as the price is right. Trucks are made to work, if that thing just traveled unloaded down the freeway I would think it has plenty of life left.

No problem - Actually Ford modulars are longevity motors - It's prolly just broke in.

Check to make sure the plugs have been changed , if not , it's due. If you don't do this type of maintenance yourself it's a very costly procedure at the dealership - around $300 -450 dollars.

Great trucks, Great motors..

Thanks. Are we talking plugs AND wires or just the plugs?

Nah, these motors don't have wires. Infact the 5.4L was first produced in 97, these motors never included spark plug wires. They have the Coil Over Plug (Cop) Ignition systems. The Coil sits right on top of the plug. There's 8 coils.

last time i checked the 4.6 and 5.4 were on the top 10 most reliable engine list. these things can take a hell of a beating. 94k is nothing if she was maintained correctly.

Oh. yeah, I'm a rookie. Anything else to look for?

I'm getting rid of my '06 Ranger to get this F-150. It's needed to pull a camper.

Thanks again.

Just make sure it has the tow pkg, if it doesn't make sure you add a transmission cooler since you are towing. Good Luck!

Ive seen E-Series vans with Triton engines in them that had 300,000-400,000miles on them and ran fine.
Ive personally got 160,900 miles on my 5.4L and other than the oil leak on the passenger side headgasket that they all had, mine runs fine.
As long as the engine runs strong and doesnt have any leaks, I wouldnt worry about it.

reliability problems with the 5.4 L ford F150

I have a 2005 F-150 with a 5.4 L engine with 125 000 klm. 3 weeks ago it started sputtering. Drove 3 minutes to garage and the motor locked up. Turns out the fuel injector stuck open and filled #8 cylinder with gas and broke the push rod. Dealer wants $10 000 to replace the motor with a Ford rebuilt one. Reliable.....not really sure, many people say the injectors fail on a regular basis.

I have over 174K miles on my 2000 F150 and is still running strong. It has been my daily driver since I bought it in july 2001 with 21K miles. I have kept the oil changed every 3000-3500 miles and the tranny fluid about every 30K miles. The only parts I have had to replace are the COPs, plugs, IAC, and alternator, all of which were I replaced myself in a short amount of time. I have towed car trailers on 300 mile round trips with no problems at all. If the truck has been taken car of I wouldnt hesitate to buy it as long as the price is right. I love my truck and I hope I get to keep it for another 174K miles.

Eric
