Any Thoughts
Hey all. I posted a thread with some pics of my 1997 F-150 with a 4.6L V8 that I had blown up a while back. Well I have rebuilt the engine and I am still having problems with it. I have replaced all pistons and rings, plugs, and everything inside the timing chain cover. I have cleaned injectors and added lifter treatment etc. to the engine and upon firing up, the engine ticks like a mother f*&^$# and when you punch it the ticking goes with the engine rpm (gets more frequent). Then when you back off the ticking still stays with the rpm (becomes less frequent). I took the SOB for a ride on the highway and it doesn't have the same power and pickup it did before I blew it up. I am thinking its a timing issue just because of the fact that I didn't use a cam positing tool when I set up the timing. Is it absolutely necessary to have this tool to time this engine? Also, when I unplug the spout connector to check timing it doesn't seem like my engine is advancing 2-3 degrees like it should. Any suggestions to what could be wrong???
PLEASE HELP!!!

Sounds like your timing may be off. Does it skip or sputter any? I had the same problem after replacing a head on my 02 4.6. I didn't use the cam positioning tools either. Do you have a Hayne's book? It tells you how to set the timing correctly. I would double check the timing and make sure that when you set #1 at TDC the camshaft keyways are 90 degrees to the surface of the heads, and that the notch on the crankshaft sproket is at 6o'clock. The problem I had was the chain jumpin a link on the sproket when I put the tensioner back on. I would check all of that to see if works.
Yeah I am gunna pull it apart again next week when I can get some time off work. I think I am just gunna sell this freakin thing its been down for months and caused me nothing but grief. Last resort I'll take it to a Ford dealer and get them to run a diagnostics test on it but at $108/hour labor its not too cheap. Sucks though I really wanna keep it!!!
Just wondering if anyone can send me a link or some info on a step by step procedure on how to properly set up the timing for this engine. I mean timing the cams to the crank/chains. Again its a 1997 F-150 4x4 Super Cab with a 4.6L Windsor style V8. I am gunna pull off the front cover and valve covers again to see what I may have done wrong.
