maintenance before vacation?

Hey everyone,

I have a few concerns. My family and me are going to Lake Mead and we are taking our boat. So that means my truck is gonna be the puller. I was just wondering what maintenance I should have done before the trip so my truck doesn't get all messed up or excessive ware due to the long trip and heat.

So far before we leave we are going to get a transmission cooler on the truck, and change the oil. What else should be done to prevent anything? I really don't want to take my truck, but my step dad's truck wont be able to pull the boat all the way there. And I don't really want the excess miles on my truck, but since my parents want to take it they gotta pay for whatever they damage. Anyways its the 5.4L V8, its got 3.73 gears. All new camshafts and heads set up for towing. The previous owner, my uncle used this truck to pull his big ocean boat. See now I'm not worried about it pulling, I just don't want anything waring down faster than normal, but whatever. Thanks guys and gals.

Since you are taking a boat, I'll assume you'll be backing it into the water. Change your rear differential when you are back from your trip.

Ford recommends changing it after submersion. I know a few who ignored that recommendation and found that they made a poor decision.

You may not want to cause any more wear than normal but the fact is, when you tow, it happens no matter what. Sounds like you are doing all the right stuff.

New tranny fluid, oil, tranny cooler (excellent), and change your diff fluid when return.....

I think you'll be fine.

So after the trip flush and put new diff fluid in? Should I put new fluid in the front and back so they were changed at the same time? I'm trying to convert the truck all over to Royal Purple oil as well.

Yes. I love Royal Purple. You do not need the 4 oz. modifier with their Rear Gear lube. I change out the rear, front, and transfer case fluids all at the same time, regardless of use. When you tow, however, especially often, it will never hurt to change out the rear diff. more often.

But, I strongly recommend using synthetic ATF also. I have RP in mine. Works great.
