starter problem

I am working on 2000 expedition with the 5.4. When I start the truck the starter will not disengage and the engine is running. The starter is new...the battery is new. Has anyone had this problem? Does anyone know what it might be? Thanks

Sounds like a defective starter, take it back and have them check it.

There's a wiring fault. Is there a remote starter or alarm system on the truck? Did you remove an of the wires from the starter relay up by the battery? It could be pinched between the relay & the solenoid.

No remote starter. Factory alarm. Have seen no wiring problems to date. I just checked the starter and I have power to the solenoid after the truck is running. I am thinking switch. Thanks

It's normal to have power on the BIG wire, but if you have power on the small wire, work backward to the relay (by the battery), then to the MLPS, and only THEN to the ignition switch (which can be affected by a sticky lock cylinder or damaged actuator rod).

What does the MLPS have to do with the small wire on the solenoid having power after the truck is running? The relay beside the battery has power after it is running as well. Thanks for your help.

Ford redesigned the MLPS because water intrusion was causing failures. If you replace yours, plan on pulling each pin out of your harness connector & installing them in the connector shell provided with the new-style MLPS. It's not as hard as it sounds, but there's not much room or wire to work with.

You can read about that redesign in this thread.

Are you saying that the power that feeds the solenoid and the relay goes through the MLPS, and that there maybe a short in the switch? Thanks

Yes, possibly. But test it before you replace it.
