Engine idles fine, but "cuts out" when driving...
All,
Just got my F150 back from the dealer lastweek to replace the A/C compressor (that extended warranty has saved me again!). 2001 F150, 5.4L with 44k miles. One more year of warranty left!
Anyway, the truck idles fine, seems to drive fine... BUT, when I'm driving down the road, just cruising, it "cuts out" for an instant, like its running outta gas. But that can't be, I've got a 1/4 take left and it idles without any hiccups.
The tach doesn't alter either. I've watched it. So I have no idea how to explain this. I haven't filled it lately, and it ran fine before bringing it to the dealer, so it can't be bad gas.
Things that come to mind:
- Fuel filter? But wouldn't it starve constantly if the filter was clogged?
- Transmission? Perhaps I just think this is an engine problem...
- Ignition? Hmmm....
The "cut outs" or sputter occurs maybe every 30 seconds or so... perhaps alittle longer. I dunno, I'd have to time it.
But it starts right up, idles no problem.... NUTZ!!
Ideas?
Thanks!

Check to see if your AC drain is leaking on the O2 sensor. Also those MEGA fuses (175 amp) have been known to cause this prob.
You have to have it running then wiggle the wire going to - or tap on the cradle holding them in order to determine. If they moved these while replacing your compresor - then there prolly broke inside and shorting out..

Thanks for the advice!
Sorry if you expected a reply right away, but I don't tend to camp in front of the computer (too many meetings while at work) and won't be home for a few hours to actually check the truck.
It'd be weird if the condensation hose location was altered so as to conflict with the O2 sensor. Can't see why they'd move the routing of that hose for a compressor change, but its easy enough to verify.

Actually , theres a TSB from Ford on that issue - I didn't say they moved the drain.
But it sounds like a MEGA fuse problem instead. As I explained above..
