$10 Air Intake got +2-3mpg

I had perpetual problems with gas consumption, and one of the possible reasons was that my OEM air intake was loose and sucked hot air from the engine. I went to walmart, got a $4 10-foot RV sewage hose, and a $6 black duct tape. I taped the hose to the air filter housing, moved it through the hole onto the fender, moved it between the fender and the engine forward and taped it behind the drivers-side headlight. Most of the hose is above the wheel mud shield.

I noticed 2-3mpg savings.

Sorry, I have to call BS on this one. Can hot intake air reduce performance? Yes, if you want to get really technical. Will it cost you 3mpg? No.

If this addition seriously helped, there must have a major obstruction before in the OEM intake.

Sounds like a case of the "placebo effect" to me. Considering the hose runs into the air filter housing, the air still runs through the OEM intake anyway. Air a few degrees cooler will not get you 3 extra mpg.

I used to get the Low Fuel light at around 270 miles on the trip odometer. It's now at 220 miles and it's barely under half a tank. I will bet I get 350-370 miles out of the tank.

Perhaps it was something so drastic that this simple fix corrected it.

Pics guy - I dunno how to upload and it takes too much time to appease you here.
Just guessing guy - I am just guessing, but I'm pushing 300 miles already and it's still not on empty.

My mileage can vary 2 - 3 mpg between tanks when I make no changes at all to the truck! There are many factors that effect mileage and the difference in intake air temp is one very small one.

Not to rain on anyone's parade, but when the fuel light comes on and how fast the needle gets to the 1/2 mark are not much to go on when you are making a before and after comparison. You need a lot better data if you want to prove a huge improvement in fuel mileage from a minor change.

As we say where I come from, "I had you all in mind" which means something similar to screw you.

I used to get 300 miles from a 25gal tank, and the light came on at 270 or so. Now, it's at 303 miles and there's still 4mm before the arrow hits the empty mark, and it goes 3mm under the empty mark before it runs out.

So it worked just fine for me, and my mileage didn't fluctuate, it was always 12.5, and now it looks like more than 12.5, so I fixed it, so good for me and screw off.
