Exclamation This is a little scary...

i know this is not relevant to engines really, but i found no other place to post. I saw this crash test on google between the mini cooper and the F-150 and the pics are a little scary. You would think the mini coop would get SMASHED in a wreck. I always think of them as Death traps, but i guess not??

here is the link:

Bump the two together and see how it comes out. Personally I just try to avoid hitting cement walls, so far it has worked out well.

Better not ride in dump trucks either, they are also deathtraps judging by the video. It is odd that whoever they hit are in pretty bad shape while as long as the truck stays upright the occupents usually come out pretty good.

I hate pictures like these

Pics like this to me are FUD. Here's why.

Kinetic energy and momentum are related to mass and velocity. Since the mass of an F150 is much greater than a mini cooper, there's much more of it (energy) to dissipate in a crash even though they are testing at the same speeds.

Ultimately, yes, the mini cooper might come out better looking, but it doesn't have to do he same amount of work that the F150 frame has to handle.

If they really want to compare something useful, they (the crash testers) need to manipulate the equations so that the two vehicles have to redirect the same amount of energy. So, what would be a 35mph crash test for an F150 might end up being a 80+ mph crash test for a mini cooper.

Which would you rather sit in when it hits a cement wall in that test?

alvinsb is exactly right.

the posting's comments by Matt reflect total ignorance of math and physics.

Force = mass times acceleration
to state it in layman's terms:

how much damage can nerf ball do to your body if it hits you at 5 mph VS how much damage can a 6000 lb. f150 do to you at 5 mph.

unfortunately too many people are going to put their faith in emotion stirring pictures VS fact. To find out the facts takes effort to react with emotion merely takes lack of maturity.this kind of crap is what fuels the media morons and why people put their faith in the crap that comes out of the mouth's of Barbara Streisand, Alex baldwin, dixie chicks, etc.

^agreed. You get the same effect by dropping a baseball and a turd off a building.

that was the old bodystyle. The newer ones do much MUCH better in crash test

people will do anything to knock off Ford from being the best selling truck. I am guessing that they are invironmental nuts that just hate that Ford F series is the best selling vehicle in the world. I say lets see a head on of a mini vs a F-150 and see what they say.

looks like the older model F-150 to me. Look closely and the bold letters say keep in mind this isn't how the two would look like if they got into a head on collision.

f150's would crush the hell out of any small car. try getting a cooper that weighed the same as the f150 and do it again.

Hmmmm... Ya THINK?

When the discussion turns to the "new '04 design", it's a BIG clue which style was in the original pic.

Anyway, it's all BS. I could engineer a test that shows how my '83 POS Bronco will take a Ferrari in the 1/8 mile. What's the point? Walk through a few junkyards or watch a few used/wrecked car auctions, and THEN tell us which one "fares better in a real-world collision".
