Once gas went past $3 a gallon I started doing a few things. First I seafoamed the gas tank a few times, then I put about a quarter can of seafoam in the vacuum line and let it sit for 10 minutes then cranked it up, smoked the neighborhood out. Maybe a little gain in mpg.

Then I changed the fuel filter, went from 10-30 oil to 5-30 synthetic. Max sidewall tire pressure, and began using hypermiling techniques. That moved me up to about 19mpg. I was feeling good but thought maybe I could do better.

Not sure if it helped but also cleaned the throttle body, changed the egr valve.

Bought an Edge evolution chip and ran it on the canned tow tune. Went up to about 21mpg average.

Changed exhaust to a SIDO cat back flowmaster 40 system and modded the air intake with the gotts mod and put a drop in K&N filter. That was last week.

Now I'm getting 28mpg highway and 21mpg city.

No bull. I'm pretty sure had I not drove so aggressively the first 180,000 miles I probably would have averaged 19mpg anyway. The hypermiling was a big improvement. The latest numbers for me the 28mpg highway, 21mpg city means the average is 24mpg. Definitely doable.

28mpg is not possible out of your truck, period. Too much weight and the BSFC cannot be low enough to get that kind of mileage and the truck still be moving.

I don't deny it is too high. Right now that's what's on the scanguage and the evo. However, I'm not sure the pcm has adapted yet to the intake mod. So it very well may be burning lean and once it's adapted the numbers will decrease.

You have to calculate it yourself, don't rely on the edge or scangauge, they use load values, MAF, temps, and inj. pw's to "guess" the mileage, they are not always correct.

I'll know the hard numbers by next week. Before the intake mod I would fill the tank and divide by the number of gallons and the last tank was 22.9

Josh is right bro.....you can't BS us here and I will tell you why.
I have a 2000 4.6L with the hypertech tune, k&n, granatelli ignition, and the JBA SI/SO cat back exhaust and I just hit 170,000k.
I (like you) have the 24 gallon tank. What I am pretty sure you do not have is the 3.08 rear end. What that means my friend is that on the highway at 70MPH I am turning 1750 rpm with my 265/70/R16 yokohama geolander HT tires. The BEST I ever received was 20.2 MPG running the 87 octane tune, tires at 38PSI,and 5W-30 full synthetic in the block and a steady 70 MPH. I ran 410 miles +/- on the tank. This was three years ago. Since gas stations have been switching to ethanol blends, I have never seen it again and I do NOT hot rod my truck (because its too damn slow anyway LOL).
Bottom line, do the math on your tank, take some pictures and then call myth busters because that is just fuc|<ing amazing. If you drove 50 and 55 everywhere then I could believe 20 to 22 consistently......
I can't wait for your results........

have you ever seen the bumper like thing on the rear end of a trailer? that is called the DOT bar, it is mandated by the federal government to be there, do you know why ? well during the first fuel crisis alot of people who thought it was perfectly safe to draft trucks were getting decapitated by the lower edge of the trailer seeing as that was where contact was being made, you might have 4-5 feet of hood but that slides very nicely under the edge of a 53ft trailer with the tandems for weight distribution is between 10-14 ft from the tail so without the dot bar the first place of contact is the windshield, so all of the impact is in the weakest part of the vehicle and all of you who think you have lighting fast reflexes just answer me this what if for some reason the brake lights on the trailer are not working, and the driver has properly adjusted brakes and the newer generation of antilock brakes on said trailer, you are going to look awful funny as a puddle on the ground when the driver hoses you off at the blue beacon

here are some # for you to actually see why you are taking a huge gamble when you draft

Passenger Car

193 feet

Tractor-Trailer, cab only

243 feet

Tractor-Trailer, empty

249 feet

Tractor-Trailer, loaded, with cool brakes

256 feet

Tractor-Trailer, loaded, with hot brakes

430 feet

so that huge extra distance it takes to stop a big rig is 56-72 ft and that is in a passenger car, put a pickup with huge tires or a couple hundred pounds in the bed and that 72 feet gets smaller and smaller and that is with average reaction time look at your phone, radio or purple cow on the side of the road you are toast

and at 60mph you are traveling at 88fps (5280/60=88) so the stopping time difference is less than one second
just trying to save a life if I can Ive seen too many cars accordioned on the back of big trucks just to let this lay and don't forget about a tire flying apart and coming in thru the windshield that get messy really quick

Rarely do I have to travel on an interstate. Max speed I go in my area is 65 and that's only if I travel down highway 51 otherwise no faster than 55.

For the past month if I'm lucky enough to get non ethanol gas, only the shell 30 miles away has it now, I can be sitting at a little over 400 miles and still have a quarter tank.

And again, I'm sure those numbers I originally posted were high. Today I've traveled 60 miles and the numbers have dropped. I'm guessing the pcm has adjusted some. Right now I have 100 miles and am just below a full tank tick by about an eight of an inch.

Well a fuel gauge is not acurate either, the first half will always get more mileage, the tank is wider at top. I can get 250-280 out of the first half, and then 160 out of the last. I also have a 26gal tank and have never put more than 23.2 gallons in it, so don't trust your needle either.

Ok, it bothered me enough that I went ahead and topped off the tank again just to see what I actually have. Same station & pump as last time.

I had 105.4 miles on the trip odometer. It took 4.275 gallons of gas to fill up. That's 24.65mpg.

I've got a lot of driving to do this weekend. So after Monday I'll fill up again and see where I'm at.

Right now I'd like my '92 f-150 to run without a cel -because it's a 2wd the mileage is pretty good, never worked it out but comparable to my '05 jeep liberty 3.7 v6 which is a gas pig.

I would love to drive the the truck maybe once a month but there's no incentive registration/insurance wise to own a second more efficient vehicle apart from the gas savings. We are tied into finance with the jeep so can't finance another vehicle right now (and the resale in the jeep is crap)

I used to own a 99 VW Golf, best car I ever owned. Would cruise at 200km/h if you wanted it to and got excellent gas mileage. I have been thinking, since we're stuck with the jeep, put a trailer hitch on it, and get a trailer for hauling the sheets of drywall etc I bought the truck for, and get something like a Golf (diesel, ideally, they get 60mpg (imperial) or better) We are at the beginning of the end, and it will only get worse from here. I read where some people are seriously returning to horses, and some smaller farms in Europe have already made the change (and they pay far higher prices for gas than the US or Canada)

Well, on that last tank I did try acetone, 3 fluid ounces, and I'm pretty sure it hurt me on mileage. So I doubt I'll try that again.

So for that tank I drove 277.1 miles, filled up with 12.75 gallons for an average of 21.73. That was about an even mix of highway and city driving.

I'll post when I next fill up and see what that average was without acetone.
