Fast startup, valve traine noise '05 5.4L

When i start my truck it has a hard start up equilivaent to starting the truck with your foot on the throttle. I wouldn't mind this but it starts so fast you can hear the valve train due to the lack of oil. This can't be good for the engine. Is there a fix for this?

What brand of oil filter and what weight and brand of oil are you using?

I'm using a fram extra guard filter and 5-30 mobil one full systhetic.

I'm not sure if this can be avoided. It seem like it is just the way Ford has the einge start?

first thing is to get rid of that fram filter and get a motocraft on there.

Switch back to 5-20 oil. The VCT systems on these 5.4 3v engines do not work properly with any other viscosity, and you're only asking for problems. Also, check the flat rate tech link in my sig.

The 5W30 Mobil 1 is the grade that's been failing tests - if you want to use Mobil 1, use 5W20 EP, and either a Motorcraft or Mobil 1 filter.

Use only 5w-20 viscosity oil, & a Motorcraft FL-820-S filter, & that will solve your problems!

When I first got my truck about 6 months ago, mine did the same thing. First cold start in the morning it would knock a little bit before the oil would get up there.

I changed the oil within a week or so of owning it and followed the owners manual w/ the 5W-20 Motorcraft Syn Blend and Motorcraft filter. It has never made a single sound or noise again on a cold start. I've always been a pretty big believer in synthetic oils, but from what many have said and researching this site intensely, the Motorcraft syn blend is the best out there for the 3v 5.4L.

Full Synthetic, will always yield better results than a Syn-Blend! What is important is using the right viscosity & Filter! Even MotorCraft makes a full Synthetic for the 5.4 3v!........

Wasn't trying to argue with you. I was simply stating what worked best for me and what I found searching this site quite a bit about the subject. No need to get into a viscosity and oiling debate.

I've got a 05 5.4 also.........engine starts fine, will idle at about 1400 rpm or so for about a minute when cold before dropping to regular idle speed.
