Problem with Engine or Transmission?

I was hoping a tune up would help but it didnt. I been working on a 97 Expedition 4X4 with only 88,000 miles. While driving at highway speeds and I need to pass or when going up a hill. I press on the gas but the RPM's dont go up and you can feel a minor shake. The shake feels like its caused from the engine not being able to push the 5000lb vehicle at only 1500 RMPs but it could be from the trans not wanting to down shift. If I press the gas down a lot, them finally the engine or trans will kick in and RPM's go up to 3500 to 4000 to get you going. When starting from a stop the RPMs and trans work fine. It only seems to occurred while already moving. Im about to take a long trip with it but not sure if its reliable with the problem. Anyone know what the problem is. Already changed all fluids, plugs, filters.

What size motor? 4.2, 4.6, 5.4, Briggs & Straton ??

What type trans ? Model: 4R70w (U) , Model: E4OD (E) ??

You changed the trans fluid right - did this occure before you changed your fluid.

Sounds like your accumulator piston is sticking or your solenoid is buggy.

Try a reboot , let it relearn the trans tables..Pull your PCM fuse - should be an orange maxi 25 in the PDB under the hood.

Give that a try

It has the 5.4L. And the transmission is the one that uses the plain mercon and not the mercon 5. I had the battery disconnected all weekend so I would think that would of reset the computer. What does the Accumulator piston do, where is it located, and whats the price of one.

That's the same tranny I have - I don't use Dex -Mercon - That sh^ts junk

You can use Mercon V in there , didn't you catch the TSB ? You can go one better than Merc V and run Amsoil 100% Synthetic - You'll get quicker and firmer shifts - your trans will run about 20 degree's cooler and it will last yuh allot longer

Sounds like your the motors missing - How does it react @ about 45mph - right after it shifts into OD ? I'll bet it starts to miss right away like that.

On a 97 5.4 , I would definitely install a fresh set of COP's - You'll most likely eliminate your problem and for sure get some performance out of it .

A set of COP's are only $96 (for all 8 together) If you know where tuh get em

Im sure it is not a misfire problem. I think you were right the first time. Might be in the trans with a kick down solenoid. That does sound more like what the problem is. Think Im going to just take it in tomorrow and see what the shop advises.

The more I think about it, could the DPFE sensor or EGR valve cause this type of problem?

Could be a clogged catalytic converter, clogged fuel filter or a clogged fuel pick-up filter in the tank.

Well - the E4OD is pretty easy to work on underneath. If you decide to test - start with your flow-rates ..

Look inside your drivers door - make sure you have trans code E @ the bottom of the tag -

Or count your pan bolts - if you have 20 - you have the awesome E4OD .

Tag will say "E" under TR @ the bottom -

The pan will look like this - with a 20 bolt count

Your Solenoid -

The bottom end of the E4OD -

Well, I took it to the shop yesterday. The problem was a #5 cylinder misfire and a bad DPFE sensor. The shop wanted $500 for the repair. Rough estimate break down was $112 for coil and $100 to replace, $100 for 8 new boots for each plug and replacement, $135 for the DPFE and replace, and $50for other misc parts and labor.
I had them hold off the repair. I ran to Oreillys and bought the DPFE for $55, new coil for $45 and Dielecric grease for $2.50 for a total of only $100. Went home and had it fixed myself in 20 minutes. It runs as it should now.
This site and the advise on it is great. A little research and I saved myself $400 on that alone. In the past week I have changed the plugs, thermostat, temp sensor, coolant, trans filter and fluid, brake and power steering fluid. All that would of cost about $700 to do at the shop. I did it for parts alone of around $100. Cant beat F150 online .

He said he was sure that it wasen't a Misfire about 5 replies ago - I believed him , but at the end that's what it ended up being.. My bad..

Well , I hit it right on the head first guess - He could have had a complete set of COPs along with a new DPFE for what he just paid the dealership had he listened - The truck would be running bettre than it does now , that's for sure

What are COP's?

I've got virtually the same symtoms on my 2001 5.4, gets a misfire just after shifting in o/d at light throttle. more gas and it picks up fine and it runs fine from idle upwards when accelerating.
