How to improbe fuel economy

How can I improve my fuel economy. I average about 13 mpg. All my mods are listed in my signature.

There are several threads that talk about MPG throughout this site. Just do a search and you should be able to find them. I will tell you up front that the overall themes of these MPG threads are "deal with it, it's a truck", "it's the mods and your subsequent lead foot", "drive slower".

You have a 4.10 rear end, 24# injectors, and an Xcal 2 and you want better fuel economy? You definately didn't think through the mods to your tuck if that was your goal. If you can afford to do that to your truck, you should be able to swallow the gas bill that comes with it. I've put 25,000 miles on my truck in the last 14 months, the gas bill is something you have to deal with. Sorry to be an ********, but it's the sad truth of owning a truck. The best thing you can do is find the optimum acceleration pattern and shift points for your truck, studies have shown that mood can effect the mpg up to 30%.

Edit: I notice that you have the 4r70w, could you elaborate a little more on your shift kit please, there is so much conflicting info on transmissions out there nowadays, I was looking to install a Transgo, but I would like to here what you did to yours. Thanks.

I'm gettin' 31 mpg, of course I had to quit driving the truckback and forth to work and buy a commuter 1990 ford probe v6 5 speed what an adjustment that has been, 4x4 to a coupe but sure has cut the gas bill in half. I guess the truck will last a lot longer now though...

did the 24# injectors hurt your economy but increase your performance???

i think if you added some underdrive pulleys and maybe efans

AND drove like miss daisy you'd get better fuel economy

Look at all my mods, I get 16mpg highway, 10 city with a lead foot. I hear a tonneau cover gets you a little more than 1mpg.

Electric fans will pick up about 10hp or so and save you a few drops of gas as well. Though e-fans are a kind of "touch-n-go" topic, some people love them, while others get nothing but problems with them.

It's a big truck with a Ford V8 motor, which have NEVER been known for being fuel-friendly.

Driving style has a huge effect. Taking easy accelerations and driving at 55-60 on the freeway will significantly boost your MPG numbers.

Keep your air filter in good shape, that's a big cause of MPG loss. Under-inflated tires are a common culprit as well.

Hey built , what gearing you runnin - the stock for our trucks is 3.55. I remember when buying mine that the dealer said that's the lowest offered in the 98 F150 - he did have to search a bit to find me one with the heavier trans that also came with 9.75 ring gears - which is wear I get all my torque from. Mann that truck would pull 6500 lbs and wouldn't sweat it a bit. I could of used a helper spring and was in the market for one , BUT , as it turned out , we started using a F350 diesel to place the wagons - Now we use a Freightliner

Just curious if you modified your gearing at all..

Yea I have 3.55's with the 9.75 rear end and e4od tranny. Ive pulled a 5000lb gooseneck with 2500lbs on it with no problems at all, I just took it easy, but yea, its a tough truck. I have a set of 4.10's sitting right here next to me, that will soon be going in.

4.10's !!! Mannn, your gonna notice a hell of a difference !! I put 4.11's in an 89 once , they replaced a stock 3.53 gear ratio - yup it had 3.53's stock with a 302 . What an improvement that was - like night and day..I ended putting 17 44's (Ground Hawgs) on her and it was still pretty quick for a big truck. I traded that in for this 98 in 98.

You'll prolly notice a HUGE difference with your mods you already have
