Question "Whistling" noise in cabin...

2002 S'Crew FX4 Lariat 5.4

I'm not sure how else to describe it. It doesn't seem to matter which gear I'm in, but always is the most noticeable between 2000 and 2500 rpm during accelleration, I am hearing a "whistling" noise...almost like a teapot whistle, but a bit lower. It sounds as though it is coming from behind the dash. I thought at first it was a grounding problem with the stereo, but completely removed it and speakers and noise was still present. Thought it was sound coming through ventilation system, but hear it even when set to "off." Sound "feels" like it is coming from behind dash area, centralized behind the stereo.

Anyone else experience this? Heard of this? Ideas on what it might be?

Other than the nuisance, nothing appears to be wrong and its running like a champ...almost a member of the 100k club!

Thanx.

My '93 whistled too when I first bought it. Seemed to slightly increase in volume when the motor lifted off idle, but if the radio was at even a moderate volume you wouldn't hear it at all.

Tuned out to be a rotty vacuum line for the HVAC system, one that goes to the actuator thingy that moves the handle as you turn the **** between A/C, vent, and defrost. I didn't even replace it, a little epoxy on the rotted part and some duct tape around and it stopped completely.

It's a long shot but could be your airbox/intake .. I found a hole in my 99 F150's intake a few years back, just had to replace the poor thing with a K&N intake.

Do a search on whistling or whistle and see a few posts. I know what you mean to a T, however, mine happens around 1600-2100 area commonly. A few have pointed in the direction of idler and or tensioner pulley bearings bieng crap, I don't know because mine has almost vanished now. If you wait long enough, problems fix themselves.

There is a TSB on that , I'll look it up if you need it , but the one I seen had to do with the AC grommet.

So...

JBrew, how does this TSB come into play if it happens regardless of my AC being on or off? Not to mention the fact that my S'Crew is a 2002?

I'll check it out anyway this weekend and let you know.

Thanx for all the replies, guyz.

My 99 wasn't too terrible about it but the intake on my 05 5.4 sounds like a vacuum cleaner under the hood when you get on the gas.

You sure there's no whistle in your exhaust pipe?

Just thought it might help - just ignore it if you have a problem with it

This TSB could apply to you as well and later year vehicles - To me this information could be helpful with your problem regardless seeing how that's also a component of your ventilation system..

If you want to explain how the TSB's are passed , forget it .

Like I said - just ignore it then...

are you sure it's not just normal intake noise, mine whines a little at higher RPM just because it's sucking more air through that same tiny hole in the wheel well, not for long though, AF1 is goin on this summer

Whistle @ 2000 plus on accel

Hey...

This might sound crazy but here goes. Alternator bearings. I searched for months to find that squeal/whistle/chirp. tried exhaust/ intake/ HVAC and finally found a post on a forum saying it was the alternator bearings. I pulled the alternator and replaced it. No more birdies.

Had the same exact problem, drove me crazy for a couple years when somebody on this board came up with the problem and a cure. Through an inside source we found out that the flow restrictor in the heater hose was the problem. Changed the heater hose and the problem was gone. The other guy took the flow restrictor out and solved the problem...An easy way to check is to put a pair of vice grips on the heater hose adjacent to the flow restrictor and see if the noise changes or goes away.
