BMW motor

I know this isn't Ford related but, all the smart automotive people are here.

My 5spd 6cyl now makes a popping sound from the exhaust when I slow down and stay in the same gear.
It doesn't do it if I down shift or just reduce RPMs by depressing the clutch.

This popping or backfiring just started and I'm not familiar with the cause.
I drive it the same I have always drove sticks.

The only other time I've seen/heard this is when I go to the short track races and the race cars all pop and backfire as they go into turns 1 and 3.

What are those racers and I doing?
Better still, what is my car doing?

What year/model is your BMW?

Popping is typically unburnt fuel igniting in the exhaust system, but BMW engine management is super-sophisticated and really shouldn't allow this to happen.

Do you have the BMW scan tool? The ECU will often store trouble codes internally that won't trigger a CEL...

It's a '98 328i.
I have a reset tool for the Oil and service lights.
The CEL hasn't come on.
I guess the next time I take it in I'll have it checked for hidden codes.

I hate to do that though. Those guys wear white lab coats and the car isn't covered under my HMO.

I've got a scan tool that I can lend to you. It's this one:

If you're interested send me a PM and we can work out the details...

Good grief Jordan, California?

That is very generous of you.
I'm well heeled despite what it says under my name.

There is a BMW stealership two miles from me.
I certainly appreciate your most gracious offer, however.

My sisters 93 325i did the same thing...and it was unburnt fuel, but as a consiquence (sp.) her muffler is now burnt out (sounds a lot racier and cooler so we never had it replaced.) it is however, a PITA to get it to pass emissions because that burn out effected the Cats and needs to be as close to out of fuel as possible in order to pass. My dad just keeps a can of gas in the back to drive it out of the inspection place and put 3 gallons in it to make it to the next gas station lol.
