Question EFI to CARB?

I was just wondering if anyone has done a transfer back to a carb?

I have a tinker toy with a 4.6 and I was drooling over a 460 and wondering how it might work in a 98 f-150.

I am getting ready to put a set of 4:10's in.

Any thoughts?

It can be done, but it will not be easy. You will have to fab up mounts for the motor and tranny, as well as probably need a new drive shaft since I doubt the current one will be the right length any longer. Even if your current tranny would bolt up to the 460, you would need some way to control it...it is current controlled by your vehicle's computer.

Next up would be all of the accessories, HVAC, and guages. All of this would have to be custom. Nothing here will just plug in and work. You would be looking at a HUGH electrical job. If you are an electrical engineer with access to the proper wiring diagrams, this would probably be realitively easy, but still time consuming. If you are not very well versed in electronics...you should probably find a buddy who is before proceeding.

The other option would be to completely gut your dash and buy aftermarket stuff to replace it with. Using something like Autotech gauges and an aftermarker HVAC system would be reasonably easy to hook up...although costly. If you go this route you can forget this truck having any chance of ever looking stock...unless you spend an ungodly amount of money for custom guages and such.

Just my opinion,

Mike

On a side note, your question is not all that uncommon. It would be really cool to see some aftermarket company come out with an ECU "replacement" that would still work with the vehicle body (i.e. guages, HVAC, cruise control, keyless entry, security systems, etc...), but not have any inputs/outputs related to engine/emissions controls. That would make it much easier to put any engine/transmission configuration in any vehicle.

My guess is the EPA and various federal laws have some issues with swapping in older equipment in a newer vehicle.

Of course...all this could be sold as an "off-road only" application. I am sure none of us would ever violate that rule...
