Ford recommends 5W30 for the 5.4L. It is a lighter weight oil than 10W40. I'm not sure why Ford says to use a rather thin oil, but I live in Florida where traditionally heavier (thicker) oil is used due to the hotter temperatures. However, I have used 5W30 in both my F150's with no ill effects.

I don't know about your new version but mine recommends 5w-20 it should say on your oil cap, as far as brands go, if you want to spend ridiculous money for not much gain go synthetic, I just use havoline, but change at no more than 2500 miles. As long as you're good about change intervals it doesn't matter

Good rule of thumb: Protect your warranty - run what the owner's manual says (5-W-20). After the warranty, you have plenty of time to start thinking about it.

For Brand, I prefer Motorcraft. It is a semi-synthetic that runs about $2.20/qt - the same price as many conventional oils. I change oil/filter at 5k miles. I've used this same procedure on my '92 ranger V6 and I currently have 192k miles and it still runs great and gets 25+ mpg. With that MPG, can't be too much wear there.

I agree with using what the manual calls for. My '99 4.6 calls for 5W30.

Do you have to go to the dealership for MOTORCRAFT oil? I have never seen it at the auto parts store I go to.

no, it's available at many parts stores and wal-mart carries it as well...the syn blend shows good results in analysis from what i've read, and as mentioned, it's relatively inexpensive

x100 on the Motorcraft 5w/20 and the Motorcraft FL820-S oil filter. Both can usually be found at Walmart.

Not only is the Motorcraft 5w/20 a synthetic blend with a pretty good reputation, but as a few others have noted, it is quite reasonably priced. I picked up some at Wallyword yesterday, and it was actually the cheapest in the store, other than the Wallyworld store brand. Lately our local Wallyworlds have often been stocking 5 qt jugs of the stuff, which offers a small price break over 5 individual quarts. If you get the jug, don't forget the sixth quart.

5w-20 has been used since 02 I think in the 5.4 and is bieng pushed to be used in earlier models requiring 5w-30, like mine. Oil brand to me diverts to racing, I buy what sponsors my favorite racer, brands make no diff, numbers mean something, use what your cap says, I know it says 5w-20. There is a good chance I installed that very cap at the factory, so I know what it should say. We even had to make sure the reading wasn't upside down when the hood is popped for the illiterate.

I have an '06 5.4L and have an oil change coming up. It's got almost 25,000 kilometres on it, that's about 15500 miles. I know we're advised to use 5w20, but a local auto place has a promotion for Mobil1 synthetic, but only in either 5w30 or 10w30. It's a good price, so I'm wondering if it's okay to change and which would be the better weight to change to.
Thanks
