Clearing Codes without Scan tool

I have a 99 F150 4.6 v8. CEL came on yesterday first time. I had AutoZone read the codes and they told me it is the bank2 O2 sensor before the cat. I bought the sensor and will install it tonight. My question is, will the light go out on it's own and will the code go away or can I some how reset it myself without another trip to the store? Will unhooking the battery for a while clear it?

Thanks. This site has saved me several hundred in service with advice... Awesome group of people.

Remove the battery cable while you install the O2 Sensor and that should make the coputer reset and the code go away.

However, most posts on this site indicate that the back O2 Sensors rarely are the problem. Maybe the Autozone guy could be incorrect.

You could get a better answer if you would post the code number so someone that has experiencd that error before could tell you what the did to fix the problem.

I meant the fron sensor

At the auto parts place they refer to them as "before the catalytic converter and after the catalytic converter". This is the one before, in the drop pipe below the exhaust manifold. Thanks for the answer on the reset. We'll see how it goes....

There is no need to disconnect the battery just to reset the computer.

Look up which 5A fuse supplies your PCM (it's in the owner's manual) and remove it while you're doing your work. Replace it when you're done.

Now you won't have to reprogram your radio or clock....

while you are at it you should also replace the other 02 sensor.

they are both a PITA and you really should replace them in pairs.

(he said bank2 not behind cat)

I will replace the one first to see how it goes. Didn't want to buy 2 and end up having to find someone to put them in if I can't get it out. I did pick up a special socket from autozone with a slot down the side.

I found some other posts here with good advice, hopefully it will go smooth like butter on hot bread.

It is still advisable to post your codes here,

There are a number of codes that involve the O2 sensors and their readings but are not due to faulty sensors.

The parts store monkeys are often wrong. It would be in your best interest to let members here help correctly diagnose your fault codes so you won't waste your money or time.
