I have a 2002 F 150 4X4 w/the 4.6L V8. I cannot believe how underpowered this thing is. I have to believe something is not right. Question: Is this a common complaint, and/or is there some relatively inexpensive solution9or otherwise) that won't compromise the factory drive train?

 

Yes - a somewhat common complaint for the 4.6

Hands-down a tuner is best at starting to wake it up - preferrably a custom tuner for the most gains & flexibility ...

 

The cheapest solution....

Drive around the V6 4x4 for a few days, and then switch back to your truck .

Honestly.....the 4.6 is fine. You don't need to be driving around a big 4x4 much faster anyhow.

I just switched to a new 5.4. That's another option .

 

i have a 97 4.6 as well. it should have a little more pep to it. o well its a truck made for hauling. ill take reliabilty over speed anyday and the 4.6 is pretty reliable from my experience.

 

i have a 02 5.4 and it does't have the take off power my 97 4.6 has or my 01 expediton

 

Could someone give a list of some of their preferred tuners for the 4.6? Thanks

NYfordguy and Pat - Head over here and get yourselves a tuner , It's a night and day difference in these trucks..

I've read awesome reviews on and would recommend the Edge Evolution and SuperChips Xcal2...

Before I did that tho , a good after market intake (AF1 = #1) and definitly a Magnaflow cat back system .. It's gotta breath..

What size tires do you have?
What is your rear gear ratio?

Gears may be a nice improvement for you.
Do a search, you'll find no one has regretted a gear swap. Even with stock tires on a 2WD truck.

 

X2 on the tuner.My truck used to be sluggish but i have installed an Edge tuner and now it hauls a$$.Weather you install Edge or Xcal2 you will prob be amazed.The shifts are also great IMO.Also you get a discount from troyer by being a member of here and he will match any legitimate venders price.

Seriously i dont see a problem with the truck if it running properily and has no performance issues, ud better thank the lord that its running! This truck has alot of power in the rear wheel drive models, however with a 4 x 4 , definitely ud notice a power reduction! Its due to the fact of a heavier drivetrain! You didnt do your homework, it is wat it is! So live with it, or trade it in for exactly wat you want! If you gonna do mods just remember to be prepare for spending alot of money, and having alot of driveability problems.Alot with the price of gas going up everday mods with get u in the wallet!

He just asked a simple question. How about offering a solution instead of telling him what he already knows.

 

these modulars are bad about getting gunked up.. run some sea foam or B12 through the intake manifold and it should help u out. theres alot of cheapo freebee mods u can do to it in one weekend.. gut the precats. and cut the stock airbox for better flow. port out the throttle body and plenum. clean the MAF.
