5.4 misfire, code thrown for #1 O2 Sensor lean

Too often now my truck shakes...misfires slightly...mostley under load, but sometimes while just cruising. It's a 98 with the 5.4. When I first bought it last summer, it had 138,000 miles, and I had a coil pack on the drivers side of the engine changed. But soon the misfire came back. I changed out the spark plugs with some bosh 2 plat. Went away for a few months and is back again. The code says my #1 O2 sensor is lean, and I think it may be an injector, but I'm not sure, and I don't want to pay a bunch if I can fix it myself. Has anyone had this problem or have any idea where to start. Thanks

What is the code #? Possible intake gasket leak or vacuum leak.

LOL

desq27 , Yeah, get the numbers from the scanner first, if you can. That would help a great deal.

Passenger side forward O2 Sensor is bad.

You need to change your plugs if you want it to run right. Put the OEM Motorcraft Brand back in her. The 98 5.4L won't run right on Bosch plugs. In fact , not many of these motors do, there picky.

At your milage you might want to look towards a new set of COP's , yours are most likely very weak..

Global Automotive (an eBay store) sells all 8 COP's for $96. Can't beat that deal.

"You need to change your plugs... new set of COP's"

Thanks for that. I've ran bosh before in other vehicles, but I can understand how this engine can be that way. I'll give that a shot. Now I'm assuming COP is coil pack...i've had one replaced, and should do the others, but they tested good from Ford.

Search this forum - Type "Bosch Plugs". That's the worst possible plugs you can put in this motor.. Make good use of the search bar , theres allot of info here , just about anything you want to know most likely has been discussed. It's quicker than waiting for an answer

COP's and coil packs are two different set ups. All 5.4L motors have Coil On Plugs (COP's) - 1 coil per cylinder = 8 coils/ NO Wires..

Coil packs consist of four wires and energizes 4 cylinders, they were used pre 2001 in most 4.6L modulars.

Motorcraft plugs in, still misfires...I'm seeing a lot of people with a similiar problem, and might just have a diagnostic ran on it. I've thought it might be an injector on the driver side, or a COP, but I need to find out for sure before I start changing parts. What's the best way to test injectors? I've tried pulling one COP at a time to see if the misfire changes, but it doesn't. Can I do that with injectors. (pull the electrical connector)

Yes, you can pull the injector connectors one at a time. Look for a single cylinder that when the injector is unplugged, does not make the misfire worse.

FWIW, it is still more likely that it is a COP problem than an injector fault.

Unplugging an injector will have the same effect as unplugging the injectors...

A good scan tool that can read misfire PIDs is really in order.

dielectric compound is your BEST friend with these motors.

Yup! If you don't grease the boots up your just wasting your time. Spark will go crazy inside of the boots. If you look inside a dry boot you'll see carbon trails

Thanks for everyone's comments. I'll be sure to put some grease on the plugs from now on. Just one more thing. Where can I pick up some motorcraft COP's cheap. I tried that automotive link with ebay and couldn't find it. I'm going to replace the three I havn't on my drivers side. And that should do it.

You should change them all , you'll be glad you did - It's the best tune up you can give your motor if you have relativley high miles..

Plain and simple, the 5.4L is a high tech engine. Keeping the ignition systems integrity intact can be crucial to it's performance. Replacing all at once keeps everything equal and balenced..

Here's Matts link with instructions for a plug changeout.

https://www.f150online.com/forums/li...parkplugs.html

Kevin @ Global Automotive sells 8 new COP's for $96 (for all 8) He use to offer a package deal COP's + Plugs for $130 , (not sure if that deals still goin.) Make sure you pull each boot from the coil and grease the entire insides of the boots - VERY IMPORTANT!!

Heres the link -
