Molile 1 5/20 full syn. On 5 quart plastic pail it will say " made to Ford Specs" or something like that. On sale at Checker for a buck less per quart - or a Wally World.

And the answer was a honest recommendation for something better.

The factory recommended oil viscosity is 5W20, so between the 2 you are making us pick from, I would say Motorcraft 5W20.

Between MC or GTX, buy the cheaper one. I think you are making far too much about the brand of oil. Use the specified 930 oil in whatever the cheapest name brand you can find, change at Fords recommended intervals, sit back and enjoy the ride. The 930 oils are that good that you don't have anything to worry about anymore. Any "full" synthetic, which there are not very many of anymore despite advertizing BS, isn't going to get your engine one mile farther. There are many, many engines out there that are over 300,000 miles on Walmart oil.
FWIW, while I don't have the best of memories, the Royal Purple is the only FULL synthetic in 5w-20 that meets Fords spec. All of the other are a Gp III dino blend. There is very little in the way of PAO basestocked oils anymore that meet Fords spec. PAOs are hard to come by as the ethylene gas to make it is getting harder to find. Doesn't make it a bad product but some of these advertizing agencies are flat lying to you about the products that you THINK you are still buying. Buying a Gp III is not necessarily bad. Mobil is using it for their Extended Life oils although I have not seen any data that would lend to me ever putting it in anything I own for 15,000 miles. But do know that just because you paid more, doesn't mean there is more value in the bottle. Mobil/Exxon and the others aren't making record and absurd profits by giving you the best money can buy at discount prices. Frankly, they're poking your eyes out.

Narvous what happen to the Trop-Artic? If your going to run 5w20 and can't find T/A throw in the MC, never have seen stocked 5w20 T/A around here so I use the MC in my truck. Wife's van gets 5w30 T/A except for the next 2 cases of 76 blend I got cheap for it.

Dear Narvous:

You're too nervous about your oil!

<sigh> How many times does this have to come up?

Use any brand you like, use synthetic or conventional, so long as it's got the latest available API rating.

Use the proper weight for your engine; for a '99, this will be 5W30.

Use a good oil filter; I recommend Motorcraft.

Change it regularly.

And quit thinking so hard about oil.

The frequency of your oil changes is more important than the type of oil you use. I was running Wal mart brand full syn through my escort zx2 and changed it at just before 3000 miles and it was till clean. My buddy had an 85 escort that he ran twal-mart oil through and that car ran like a champ he decided to put penzoil in there and just burnt that crap like crazy and as soon as he had switched back to walmart oil it ran like a champ again

Look for that symbol and then find the proper weight.

If you aren't real high on miles, you should be back-specked to 5w20 give it a try I switched with about 50,000 on the clock. I run MC at 5,000 mile changes alot of short runs with only 25% highway runs and looks good enough when I drain it. Hopefully the T/A is costing about 60 cents less a quart then the Castrol, that savings will pay for your filter

Any SM rated 5w-30 (or 5w-20) will work fine. There's not as much difference between brands of oils as many of us think. Motorcraft oil is made by Conoco Philips and Castrol does not refine one drop of oil they blend the final product. That said, both are excellent products. Why not try the Motorcraft synthetic blend 5w-20? Very economical and easy to find. Go 5K between changes with confidence.

Ford back speced all these modular V8s to run 5w-20. If you don't want to go that thin stick with the 5w-30, no harm either way. Castrol would be my pick, changed every 5K.
