I had a lifted Bronco with the 300 L6. It had 4.56 gears, 40" ground hawgs and C6 tranny (3 speed). I got about 8 mpg no matter how I drove it.

No, I don't remember your transmission. Haynes describes how to check the fan clutch, and it'll help you take optimal care of it.

I used to drive my 4.9L like it was a Viper, and it did great. ~13mpg with over 1,000 lbs of cargo & extra weight all the time, and it would tow over 10Kip with 3.08s & 32s. I never tried to pull a bulldozer, but I did tow a big dump truck (the kind built on a semi chassis). The engine now has over 350Kmi without a rebuild, but WITH a wreck hard enough to break both mounts, crush the Y-pipe against the x-mbr, & shatter all the accessory brackets. against the radiator/core support. Even though it hasn't been driven in more than a year (bad rear axle), it still runs fine.
