1997 4.6 engine removal
1997 4.6 engine removal
I got my engine on order and plan on taking the old out with the tranny on it, Puting the new engine and tranny back in the same way.
Does anyone know if I can take out the engine and tranny without taking off the front end of the truck. It looks like now, I need to take off the cross memeber over the raditor to get the engine out.
Has anyone done this before.
Please let me know, it would save alot of work if i don;t ahve to take the front of the truck apart.

Well the Engine alone just fits after removing the Radiator. If you want to do it with the Tranny attached, don't know why you would want to do this.
You would definatly need to remove more, if not all, of the front end.
Good luck with it.

If you have a lift it would be easier to lift the cab and front sheet metal off together. Don't laugh, go to www.flatratetech.com and they show you how

Just to let you know that I am not crazy, the reason for taking it all out, is that the motor and tranny have over 300,000 miles on them. So, my plan was to take them out as one unit and put them back in that way. I shoudl be able to take the front end of the truck off with out the cab.
I was just wondering if anyone had done it this way before.
Taking the cab off is not an option.

Well, call me crazy, but I cut the cross over of the radiator, now I have plenty of room to get the motor and tranny out in one move. I’ll reattach it with some angle iron and bolts when putting it back together.
Forgot to tell everyone that the motor had a bad head gasket. I’ve been noticing water missing, but not a bad water pump. Just enough got into the cylinder that when I went to start it broke something. I know now I can not turn the crank.
Nah, Not with 300,000 miles on it. I just put in a 50,000 used rear end last summer, so with a 60,000 tranny and engine, I have almost a new truck. Shocks are new and upper control arms are new and new lower ball joints.
New altenator, starter, so there is not much more to replace.
