Time for a new Thermostat. Stock or step down?

Looks like my current thermostat may be stuck slightly open. I am going to replace it this weekend but I am not sure if I should get the standard 195 or a step down to let it run a little cooler. I have heard that running a little cooler helps with performance and life of the parts, but I do not want to set off my SES light. Any recommendations?

These engines are designed to run at that temp. I would go back with a 195. It will be most efficient. Not like the old days when we had to try to get them to run cooler.

Do what Jay says. If it was better, Ford would have made it that way from the factory.

I wouldn't say they would do that chester, but at the very least the aftermarket would be all over that. The stock thermostat is fine, going from a 192(stock) to say a 180 may cause the engine to run in a closed loop- NFG unless it's warming up.

Just curious if temp gauge was not reading normal or if heater wasn't as warm as usual.

Thanks for the advise. I will stop by the Ford parts store and pick it up this afternoon.

The heat is fine. My temp does rise above the temperature symbol (about 1/3 to 1/4 of the way). My SES light is on and I can not remember the code but it had to do with the temperature and not being able to run closed loop. I think normal operating temp was right in the middle. I have also read that it could be a sensor.

I have 133k miles on it so figured it was about time to change it out anyway.
