Time for a new 4.6?

Looks like my engine is going on my '97 XLT 4x4. At the very least I'm looking at a new head gasket. First major repaire after 160,000 so I can't complain too loudly. Any idea what a new or rebuilt engine should cost me installed vice just a head gasket? Also, any good engine upgrades available (beyond the basic bolt ons) that my 5 speed tranny will hold up too?

Thanks

What's wrong with your engine? What's it's symptoms?

4.6 engine problems

The truck seems to run fine. I was home for a brief period of time (currently working with the Army in preparation for a year in Iraq), and the oil pressure light came on. When I checked the oil, it was off the dipstick. Three quarts brought it up but it quickly ran low again (25 miles). Driveability is fine, the temperature is stable, no water appears on the dipstick. I cannot find a oil leak of significance under the hood or under the truck. It just seems to be going out too fast to be going though the rings.

Check the back of the motor. My head gasket started leaking there. I put in a new motor for around $300 final cost. I did it myself.

If I were you, I'd find out where that oil is going. It might not be as big of a deal as you think. Who knows....
